Prep Wrestling:
Columbia High junior Greg Strain accounted for all six of his team's points last Saturday, winning a pair of decisions during the 25th annual Columbia Gorge Invitational at Stevenson High School.
Strain, wrestling in the 152-pound class, lost his opening match to Matt Lewis of Prairie, by fall at 1:03 of the first period.
He stayed alive in the tournament with a 10-8 decision over Fort Vancouver's Skyler Stroup in the loser's bracket. He split his next two matches and finished sixth in his weight class.
Not so lucky were junior Kayla Crank (160) and sophomores Austin Krentz (135) and Sam Mart (171).
Crank lost by falls to Rick Copsey of Camas and Amado Belador of The Dalles Wahtonka.
Krentz also was pinned twice: first by Leo Gonzalez of Hood River, then by Evan Bastian of Washougal.
Mart had to wrestle a pigtail match to qualify for the tournament. He lost by a fall.
Prep Gymnastics:
Jessica Strain of White Salmon scored her first all-around finish of the season in helping Stevenson to a 153.75-135.35 victory Jan. 19 against Fort Vancouver.
Strain, a Columbia High junior competing for Stevenson, beat out teammate Kaitlyn Richards, 32.8 to 31.95, for the top individual honor.
She won on the uneven bars with a score of 7.6 and placed second in the vault (8.3), on the balance beam (8.2) and in the floor exercise (8.5).
Richards posted victories in the vault (8.5) and the floor exercise (8.6), was second on the bars (7.15) and tied for third on the beam (7.7).
Prep Basketball:
Klickitat junior Jonas Keys is the county's top scorer among boys high school players at this point in the 2004-05 season. He has 250 points and is averaging 22.7 points per game through 11 games.
Not far behind him, average-wise, is Goldendale senior Callan Wilkins. He's scored 261 points in 13 games for a 20.1 ppg average.
Rounding out the top five are Goldendale senior Ryan Gleckner (17.8 ppg, 222 in 13), White Salmon senior Josabet Pulido (16.5 ppg, 198 in 12) and Lyle senior Kalvin Kernan (16.3 ppg, 179 in 11).
The leading scorer among girls so far is Bickleton senior Annie Hess. She is scoring at a 17.8 ppg clip (178 in 10).
Following Hess is Lyle senior Tara Rappe, who has scored 147 points in nine games for a 16.3 ppg average.
Nordic Skiing:
Come enjoy a winter morning at Mt. Adams during the 5-mile (8km) "Big Tree Ski" cross-country ski race on Saturday, Jan. 29.
The free event is open to both competitive racers and those wishing to ski at a more relaxed pace. The course is a loop trail for classic diagonal stride skiing. The race is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m., with registration beginning at 9.
Participants are asked to meet at the Pineside Sno-Park, six miles north of Trout Lake. Vehicles must have a Sno-Park permit. For information call (509) 395-2617.
Snowshoeing:
A free, guided snowshoe walk through the Trout Lake Preserve will be held Saturday, Jan. 29. Wildlife biologists will lead the two-hour walk through this outstanding natural resource area.
Participants are asked to meet at the Mt. Adams Ranger District parking lot at 10 a.m.
Organizers of the walk note a limited number of snowshoes will be available to borrow on a first-come basis for those who don't own a pair. For information call (509) 395-2318.
