Thanks to the persistence of the Lyle Community Action Council and interested citizens, we now have a 30 mph speed limit through the corridor of our community. The state installed the new signs, which also moved the 60 mph speed limit farther to the east and west of the city limits. Have you noticed that drivers are already slowing down? Hurrah!!!
Gorge Reality, a Lyle based non-profit property rights advocate group, held a public meeting on Feb. 20 at the Lions Community Center in Lyle. Speakers were Dana Peck Economic Development director, who spoke on the county's pursuit for permits for water reserved for irrigation and municipal use in the John Day and McNary pools.
Jerry Smith and Jim Rhoades spoke on Condit Dam and the proposed removal by PacifiCorp. Citizens are urged to participate in Earth Day and show their support for saving Condit Dam, which provides enough electricity for Klickitat and Skamania counties. Dates for Earth Day will be announced later.
David Sauter spoke on the Columbia River Gorge Management Plan review. Once again, the citizens who are governed by the Scenic Act have been deemed incompetent to participate in the review. Only Gorge commissioners, staff, and appointed planners are going to be allowed on the review committee. Something stinks in the Gorge.
Bill Schmitt, chair of Gorge Reality, shared stats of the amount of acreage that has come off the tax rolls since the conception of the Scenic Act. Bill reported that Doc Hastings and Greg Walden have been given a petition of 5000 signatures requesting a Congressional Oversight Hearing on the Gorge Commission and the Management Plan.
Twenty-three ladies enjoyed a birthday luncheon at the Lone Pine Restaurant in The Dalles, on Feb. 20. This was the first luncheon of this year and eight birthdays were honored. Those celebrating were Betty, Martha, Joan, Marg, Ida, Marilyn, Marcia, and Barbara. Once again, thanks Marcella.

Van Corfix Sorensen: "Van Sorensen and his wife Edith, enjoyed most of all to visit with their many friends and neighbors. They took an active part in Columbia Grange at Lyle and the Methodist Church. Death came to this kindly man April 1, 1951 and he was buried in the Balch Cemetery on the hill near Lyle. His good and faithful wife, Edith, passed away December 19, 1965." -- Walter and Eunice Omeg
