Bridges and boardwalks await pedestrians at South Side Indian Creek Trail, a new spoke of the trail network that brings a forest vibe inside Hood River’s city limits.
The shady trail stems from Eighth Street near Horizon Christian School, bends west for about half a mile along Indian Creek, then meets East Indian Creek Trail behind Dutch Bros. Coffee off 12th Street.
A grand opening celebration for the new trail segment is scheduled Saturday, May 6 at 9 a.m. The “South Side Stroll” event meets at the 12th Street connection, next to Dutch Bros.
The south stretch, complete with bridges and stairs, was created by Twin Oaks Trails and Design, and staff and volunteers with Hood River Valley Parks and Recreation District, which manages the trail. Much of the work was completed last summer, but the wooded path will be officially opening to the public this week.
The project was funded by system development charges.
“This trail connection is a great example of a use of SDC funding. It connects the Sieverkropp neighborhood to the Indian Creek Trail through Eliot Park,” noted Mark Hickok, Parks District director, in an email.
Twin Oaks led the more technical work. Trail builders Daryl and Avery Hoyt explained last summer that they crafted trail features characteristic of U.S. Forest Service trails.
Ferns and leafy greenery line the trail’s planked walkways. While a bit steeper than most existing pieces of Indian Creek Trail, the south stretch is graded at a family-friendly level for hiking. Stairs ease the going at some of the rougher hill passages.
This week, parks staff have been putting in finishing touches like informational signage.
