On Saturday, Nov. 13, at 1 p.m., the Discovery Center and Matt Fox present a slideshow and discussion about the life cycle of the Pacific lamprey and its traditional cultural relevance to the Native American tribes of the region.
Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs fisheries biologist Fox is passionate about the lamprey, from their place in a sustainable ecosystem, to what their dramatic decline may indicate about the health of the Columbia River.
"Lamprey predate salmon by 420 million years, yet they are facing eminent loss in just the last half century," states Fox. "They may be a key part of the food chain, possibly important to the survival of several other species, including sea lions and salmon."
Listed as a "species of concern" by the US Fish and Wildlife Service, summer run counts above the Dalles Dam show only 1-2 percent remain of the multitudes of Pacific lamprey that out-migrated in 1960, shortly after the dam was built.
