Skamania County residents have expressed concerns to the Washington State Patrol (WSP) regarding commercial trucks in the gorge speeding, crossing the centerline and using SR-14 to avoid the scales at Cascade Locks on I-84 in Oregon.
The WSP and Clark County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) responded to those concerns on Nov. 23, by conducting a one day, 8-hour emphasis at three different locations in the Gorge.
Nine officers worked The Cape Horn Traffic Safety Corridor at mileposts 22-36 (the CCSO officers worked the east end of SR14 up to the county line at milepost 21); the Home Valley Scale at milepost 50; and the SR-14 Tunnels at mileposts 58 to 60
The emphasis summary included the following: 45 CVSA inspections were conducted; two Level 1 inspections (most intensive inspection); 26 Level 2 inspections; and 18 Level 3 inspections; six vehicles were placed out of service (21 percent) for equipment safety violations including four for load securement violations; four drivers were placed out of service (9 percent) for hours of service or CDL violations; four weight violations resulting in over $1000.00 in fines; 14 drivers, including seven commercial vehicles, were contacted for speeding; three drivers were cited for aggressive driving around commercial vehicles; six drivers were contacted for centerline violations; and nine drivers were contacted regarding tire chain violations. Chain/Traction device enforcement and education was also included and will become more prevalent as inclement weather becomes the norm in this area.
