The Accelerated Reader (AR) program hosted an ice cream party at the Lyle Middle School last week. The top class was Mr. Becker's 8th grade -- 78 percent of the students reached or passed their goals. Top three AR point achievers were Hannah Goodenough, James Walker and Kyle Grayson. Congrats to Reggie Grace and Thomas Bell -- winners of a drawing.
Family and friends filled the funeral home in White Salmon for the celebration of the life of Gene Struck. Gene's ancestors were among the first 18 families to settle on High Prairie. Gene grew up in Lyle and raised his family here. Gene worked at many jobs in the area but logging was his love.
The next Lyle Community Council meeting is Monday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m. at the Lions Community Building. Plan to attend and take part. The PUD will be on hand to give the community an update on the new Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The annual spring clean up is set for April 9 and 10 this year. This will be your chance to do your spring-cleaning and dump the trash for a token donation. There will be a truck to pick up appliances, and scrap metal. We will give you more information as the time gets closer.
Also, it's not too soon to begin planning for the 13-mile yard sale coming up in June. While you are doing your spring cleaning, look for your disposable items that could be a treasure for others.
Watch your mail for the next council newsletter. We have included a survey and are asking for your timely response.
Community churches are Lyle United Methodist, 403 W Klickitat St., and Lyle Celebration Center, 715 Washington St.
History -- Since the Lyle United Methodist Church will celebrate 100 years this year we thought we would print its history.
The Lyle Community Church became the Community Methodist Church of Lyle in 1937.
Many changes and improvements were made to the building thought the years, until perhaps now it bears little resemblance to the original structure. Records show of extensive improvements in the early 1950s and again in the 1960s. Many persons were untiring in their efforts and generous with financial assistance, and to name them all would be impossible. Special mention should be made, however, of the MYF Group, their leaders and parents and Anna Omeg. The MYF group raised money; they and their leaders and parents spearheaded the venture, and spent untold hours completing the projects. It was through the generosity of Mrs. Omeg and others this was made possible.
The nicest thing about the future is that it always starts tomorrow.
