Rasmussen Farms in Pine Grove, the popular Hood River destination farm, opens April 15 for the 2011 season, with new proprietors Julie and Patrick Milling taking over operation of the farm, farm store, greenhouses and special events from Lynn and Dollie Rasmussen, who are retiring.
The Rasmussen family established Rasmussen Farms in 1945. In 1963, in addition to producing agricultural products, the family began welcoming visitors to the scenic farm located in the heart of the Hood River Valley, with its photo-perfect panoramas of Mount Hood, the Cascade Range and of surrounding farms and orchards.
After decades of running the farm and welcoming visitors, Lynn and Dollie Rasmussen decided the time has come to retire. None of the younger members of the Rasmussen family felt they could take over the operation, although all hated to see the tradition end. Lynn and Dollie intended only to continue operating the greenhouse this year.
The Millings moved to Hood River six years ago. Patrick is an arborist who has a tree care service. Julie accepted a job at - Rasmussen Farms - where she has handled computer and office duties.
In 2010, the Millings purchased Rasmussen Farms' gift pack business, and enjoyed a successful and busy holiday season.
As 2011 arrived, a plan developed for them to take on the other aspects of the farm.
The farm will be open daily from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. through mid-November. Parking and admission are free.
