GLENWOOD HOMEMAKERS
The Glenwood Grange #94 Family Living Program is designed to encourage activities that will result in better living at the local, state, national, and international level. To that end, the Grange is requesting support from the Glenwood community. The first project is to collect used eyeglasses for donation to Dr. James Ogden of Goldendale. Dr. Ogden uses these donated glasses in his worldwide charities, fitting the refurbished glasses to patients who otherwise would not be able to afford them.
The second project is to collect aluminum can tabs. The tabs will be taken to the state grange convention in June, to be donated to the Ronald McDonald House in Spokane. That charity uses money received from recycling the aluminum to help fund their local Ronald McDonald House. Last year the state grange donated half a ton of tabs for that cause.
A third request is for canceled postage stamps to help fund cancer research. Collection cans for all these items have been placed at the Glenwood General Store and Mountain Inn. These worthy causes are a way to donate items that might otherwise be discarded. All community support is greatly appreciated.
The grange would also like to announce a quilt block contest for all ages. Grange membership is not a requirement. The block theme is the "Patchwork Pattern" of your choice using only three colors: pink, purple, and yellow. The blocks should be 12.5 inches square and will be judged at the state grange convention in June. Monetary prizes will be given in the amounts of $15 for first place, $12, for second place, and $9 for third place. This is a good time to look through your fabric remnants and come up with a fun patchwork design. For more information on any of the donation requests or the quilt block contest, please contact Mary Pierce, family living director, at 364-3344.
Congratulations to hard-working students who qualified for the first semester's honor roll at the Glenwood School: sixth graders Madi Couch, Kyle Dean, Brittany McCoy and Forrest Putnam; seventh grader Colton Troh; eighth graders Baylee Couch, Reyauna Guzman and Bethany Putnam; freshmen Greg Dechand, Becca Hallenbeck, Tiffany McCoy and Ashley Sampson; sophomores Richard Slawson and Jonathon Throop; Junior Dakota Jones; and seniors Spencer Hallenbeck, Catherine Settler and Perry Wasgatt. Each of the students deserve recognition for their efforts with their studies.
The Glenwood Homemakers held its annual Valentine's dinner at the home of Oop and Diane Burgin on Feb. 11. The Homemakers and their sweeties were treated to a nice dinner and an evening of games and laughs.
The Pioneer Memorial Community Church (PMCC) ladies will be meeting for a craft day on Saturday morning, Feb. 18, from 9 a.m. until about noon. Scrapbooking, sewing, quilting or any other portable project can be worked on while you visit! Following the craft time, the ladies will retire to the Mountain Inn for a nice lunch at 1 p.m. All ladies are invited to participate!
The PMCC men will meet for breakfast at the Mountain Inn at 8 a.m. on Feb. 18.
One of my favorite events is the annual spelling bee at the school. This year's bee will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 28, at 6 p.m. in the multi-purpose room. The GHS Honor Society hosts the contest for first through eighth graders; and provides refreshments for students, parents and community members following the spelling bee.
