THE DALLES — The Dalles High Riverhawks girls extended their win streak to four in a row after winning two non-league games last week in OSAA Class 4A girls basketball.
Playing their first home game of the season on Dec. 16, the No. 16-ranked Riverhawks (4-4) won a non-league match-up, 44-39, over the No. 12-ranked St. Helens High Lions (5-2).
The Riverhawks led 13-4 after the first quarter and they were ahead 25-17 at halftime.
The Dalles sophomore Bryce Newby led the Riverhawks in scoring with 14 points.
The Riverhawks then notched a fourth consecutive non-league victory, 42-38, over the Class 3A Sutherlin High Bulldogs (5-3) on Dec. 18. That was the first of three non-league contests in the South Coast Les Schwab Tournament at Marshfield High School in Coos Bay.
Anuhea Peters led the Riverhawks in scoring with 11 points, followed by Newby and Evelyn Rogers with eight points each.
The Riverhawks were seeking to get a fifth straight win in a Dec. 19 match-up against the Class 5A Mountain View High Cougars (3-3) from Bend. In a close contest, the Riverhawks played well and just fell a little short in a 37-32 loss, snapping their win streak. Newby led the Riverhawks in scoring with 11 points, while Johnston scored 10 points. Newby earned a selection to the South Coast All-Tournament Team.
The Riverhawks were seeking to get a home win in their Dec. 23 non-league match-up against the winless Class 3A McLoughlin High Pioneers (0-7). The Riverhawks play their next game at 3 p.m. on Jan. 2 at Tillamook (3-1).
