Funeral homes often submit obituaries as a service to the families they are assisting. However, we will be happy to accept obituaries from family members pending proper verification of the death.
Rebecca “Becky” Bailey was born in Ellensburg, Washington, and was The Chosen Baby to Charles A. Babcock and Marjorie D. Babcock. She is survived by her brother, Douglas R. Babcock and Karen Horikiri; many cousins, nieces, and nephews from the Babcock, Schultz, Tufts, Scott, and Buschini families; lifelong family friends Churchill and Virgie Silvers, Jerry, Sandy, Kim and Brad. Mike, Steven, Jacob, and Karina Bailey. Kris, Dave, Dylan, Kyle, and Katy Belles. Jody Carlon, Becky Fry, Connie Krummrich, Jude Merril, and Diana Bailey — affectionately known as “The Tribe” and her Oregon Veterans’ Home family.
Becky graduated from Wapato High School in 1968, where she was active in debate and ASB. A strong student with a lifelong love of learning, she went on to become a dedicated and beloved K–12 teacher in the Klickitat Schools. “Mrs. L” especially enjoyed teaching American literature and composition and took great pride in advising student drama productions.
Becky was fortunate to have two great loves in her life. She met her first husband, Bruce Lorentz, while they were attending WSU, and they married in June 1973 after graduation. Later, after being introduced by mutual friends, she married Tom Bailey in October 2002 and made The Dalles, Oregon, their home.
Becky’s love of learning, adventurous spirit, and kindness were evident throughout her life. She was a walking encyclopedia of birds, flowers, cultures, and historical events. While she and Bruce studied at the University of Arizona in Tucson, she developed a lasting appreciation for the beauty of the Southwest. She never met a book she didn’t finish, ran a full marathon in Anchorage, Alaska, enjoyed music of all genres and live performances of the arts. In retirement, Becky worked at Klindt’s bookstore, volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, Government Affairs, P.E.O., and reviewed entry applications for the CGCC nursing program.
A celebration of life will be held on July 25 at Bargeway Pub & Catering, 1535 Bargeway Road, The Dalles: 11 a.m., light appetizers, lemonade, and iced tea provided; cash bar available. At noon is the celebration of life ceremony and 1-3 p.m. a time to socialize and share memories.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to:
