SWW 1A Trico Division girls soccer coaches affirmed 2008 was the Year of the Bruin in their voting for all-league honors.
Columbia High junior Katie Yarnell was their choice for Defensive Most Valuable Player, Bruins Coach Amy Kasenga was their Coach of the Year and senior midfielder Whitney Reynier (8 goals, 9 assists) shared the Offensive Most Valuable Player award with La Center senior Shay Cheeseman.
CHS, which posted a school-record 12 victories in 2008, also landed three players—junior forward Joanna Villa (16 goals, 2 assists), senior midfielder Anna Schmid (13 goals) and junior defender Sandra Guzman—on the All-Trico First Team.
Second Team spots went to senior midfielder Michelle McMillen (5 goals, 5 assists), senior goalkeeper Claire Stevenson (.82 goals against/match), senior defender Emily Paxson (2 goals), sophomore midfielder Laurel Huth (2 goals, 1 assist) and freshman forward Lyndsey Scott (7 goals, 5 assists).
In addition to the individual awards and honors, Columbia High garnered the Trico Division’s Sportsmanship Award for the second year in a row (CHS shared the award in 2007 with Stevenson).
Yarnell, a first-year player from Trout Lake, anchored a Bruins defense that recorded a school-record eight shutouts and allowed 17 goals in 17 matches.
Reynier, a four-year starter and four-time All-Trico performer, led a Columbia High offense that scored 62 goals.
The Coach of the Year award was the second for Kasenga, who, for the second time, guided CHS to a share of the Trico championship and a state tournament berth.
The school also recently learned that its varsity girls soccer program had earned a team award for academic achievement from the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA).
Nina Clark, assistant to CHS athletic director Howard Kreps, said the award is based on a varsity team’s combined grade-point average (GPA) of 3.5 or higher for their most recent final semester grades.
“This award is from the WIAA State Academic Achievement Award Program and is called ‘Outstanding Scholastic Award,’” Clark said. “The girls soccer team qualified with a GPA of 3.580.”
