It was a rough opening weekend of Greater Columbia B League play for girls basketball teams from Klickitat, Trout Lake/Glenwood and Lyle/Wishram.
All three lost their GCB openers last Saturday: Klickitat at Bickleton, Trout Lake/Glenwood at La Salle and Lyle/Wishram to Yakama Tribal School. Moreover, in non-league play, Trout Lake/Glenwood topped Lyle/Wishram last Friday in Glenwood.
At Bickleton 56, Klickitat 33:
The Pirates evened their GCB record at 1-1 behind the scoring and all-around play of Star Kibby and Katelynn Clinton.
Kibby scored 18 points and made 10 steals, and Clinton had 15 points, 11 steals and 11 rebounds for Bickleton (6-2 overall), which opened a 19-9 lead after one quarter and led 32-16 at halftime.
For Klickitat (0-1, 6-3), Samantha Brewer tallied a game-high 21 points.
Yakama Tribal 53, at Lyle/Wishram 36:
The Eagles broke the game open in the third quarter, outscoring the host Cougars, 17-8, to extend a 17-14 halftime lead to 34-22.
Noted Cougars Coach Chris Barthlow: "We had a couple of girls have really big games for us, but it wasn't enough to overcome what Yakama did in the second half. They just flat out-hustled us on the floor."
Tosha Cloud led the Cougars (0-1, 3-5) with 17 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Lexi Becker added 17 rebounds and Treane Wells chipped in with 13.
Lyle/Wishram's best quarter, in terms of offensive production, was the last when it scored 14 points. Overall, the Cougars had an off-night shooting the ball, going 14 for 60 from the field and 8 of 26 from the foul line.
They also were missing starting guard Karlee Roth for the second game in a row; the freshman injured a knee in a Dec. 28 holiday tournament game against White Salmon.
"At this point, we aren't sure if it's a season-ending injury," Barthlow said.
Faye Gregg and Candice Eyle each scored 19 points to pace Yakama Tribal.
At La Salle 74, Trout Lake/Glenwood 13:
The unbeaten Lightning subdued the Eagle Mustangs with a 29-4 opening quarter.
All told, three players scored in double figures for La Salle (2-0, 11-0), which went on to lead 48-7 at halftime and 66-10 after three quarters.
For Trout Lake/Glenwood (0-1, 7-2), Kindra VanLaar scored six points, Stephanie Anderson had four and Dave'y Lumley added three.
At Trout Lake/Glenwood 43, Lyle/Wishram 18:
The Eagle Mustangs rolled to their seventh win of the season against a Cougars squad that couldn't handle TLG's defensive pressure.
