The Port of Klickitat has received a "No Further Action" (NFA) determination from the Washington Department of Ecology (DOE) for its cleanup of the Dow Road special waste site located at the Dallesport Industrial Park.
Over 1,200 tons of material, commonly called "saltcake," were removed earlier this year and disposed of in accordance with DOE requirements. Soil samples were then taken and subjected to laboratory analysis with the results submitted to DOE.
"We appreciate the cooperation and assistance of the DOE Toxics Division staff and the efforts of local contractor James Dean Construction as we worked to have this material safely removed," said Marc Thornsbury, the Port's executive director. "Their efforts, combined with the commission's prompt action to take advantage of equipment already present at the RAMCO site, limited cleanup costs to less than $40,000. We are now one step closer to achieving the removal of all contaminants from the Port's properties at Dallesport."
The material, which contained significant amounts of aluminum, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium as well as small amounts of arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, nickel, and zinc, was nearly identical to that dumped by the former Recycled Aluminum Metals Company (a.k.a. RAMCO) near the eastern boundary of the industrial park.
Cleanup of the larger RAMCO disposal site will soon enter its fourth year. With significant budget cuts and no new funds allocated for the cleanup project, the Washington Department of Ecology has turned to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for assistance in finishing the cleanup.
The EPA is now the lead agency in bringing the RAMCO project to completion.
