The Port of Klickitat has acquired approximately one acre of property, adjacent to its Bingen Point holdings, from the BNSF Railway.
Located northwest of Marina Park, the property is an important component of future plans to provide improved access to the park and to privately held properties east of the Port.
"This is a strategic acquisition in the sense that its real value will be felt in five to 10 years," said Marc Thornsbury, the Port's executive director. "Having this property will allow us to widen and straighten Lakeview Blvd. at a future date. That, in turn, will free additional property to the south for development and improve a key element of any future transportation plan for the properties east of Maple St. and south of the rail line."
Future plans call for replacement of the section of Lakeview Blvd. between Harbor Dr. and Marina Park with a new road running immediately north of the current location.
Once abandoned, the old roadway will be incorporated into the adjoining lots to the south.
Thornsbury said this is one more step in the process, started earlier this year, of preparing for additional development at Bingen Point.
