Hallman said, "The Gorge has been my home for the past ten years, and has been very kind to me and my lens...I am thankful for the many friendships and experiences that are the inspiration of my work. When you put yourself in nature's way -- beautiful things are bound to happen."
An emergency room nurse and former Colorado Ski Patroller, Hallman has always had a love of the outdoors. His passion for photography stretches back 20 years -- all the way back to Chicago where he was born and raised on the shores of Lake Michigan.
His images are many and varied, and range from landscapes and portraits to extreme sports and architecture, from dreamy sunsets in the desert southwest to fall foliage in Alaska, or a well documented climbing trip to Nepal that was recognized by the LA Times.
Ackerman started doing black and white and color darkroom work 25 years ago. The majority of her focus was on women's studies, social and spiritual issues, nature and animals which continues to this day. She has worked with Polaroid image and emulsion transfers and many other styles.
She creates beautiful images without a darkroom. They capture rich subtle color and textural dreamlike feel.
Starting in 2003, Ackerman added digital work to her repertoire. She does large mixed media pieces that employ plaster, paint, ink, watercolor, found objects and beeswax. She is attracted to vacant abstract landscapes of pure form, shape, texture, line, pattern and color. Her work utilizes metaphors and deeper meanings that subtly address collective old issues and encourages the viewer to go deeper and feel, think, heal or uplift.
Ackerman has lived in Hood River since 1989. She is the owner of Ackerman Photography Studio in White Salmon.
