DARYL SPALDING
Daryl C. Spalding, 82, of Goldendale, died on June 22, 2001, at the Mid Columbia Medical Center in The Dalles, Ore.
Mr. Spalding was born Aug. 24, 1918, in Goldendale, to Martin H. and Wilma E. Spalding. He graduated from Goldendale High School in 1937 and attended Linfield College on a basketball scholarship, but due to the depression his formal schooling was brought to an end.
On Oct. 12, 1941, he married Marcella E. Short in Ellensburg. He joined the Army Air Force in 1942 and became a flight instructor. He was honorably discharged in 1945 as a Major in the Air Force. After 1945, he was an Army Air Force Reservist until retiring at age 60.
Mr. Spalding was very active in the community, serving 25 years on the Goldendale Fire Department, 15 years on the school board, five years on the city council, two years on the Governor's Board for Small Schools, and eight years as a county commissioner, where he helped negotiate the contract for the Rabanco Landfill.
He worked for the bank for 35 years, starting with Pioneer State Bank and retiring from Rainier Bank Corporation as a vice president in 1984.
He served from 1950 to 1982 as a fair board member, serving as president three different times during the 32-year period. During his time with the fair board, he helped initiate many improvements at the Klickitat County Fairgrounds.
Mr. Spalding received many honors: in 1964, he was an honorary cattleman of the year; he received the outstanding boss award from the Goldendale Chamber of Commerce in 1984; in 1991, he won an outstanding service award from the Klickitat County Livestock Association; and in 1999, he was grand marshal of the Klickitat County Fair.
He was a great friend to all the kids in the county, helping them at their livestock auctions and serving as rodeo announcer for junior and high school rodeos for five years.
He was a member of the American Legion for 55 years.
Mr. Spalding is survived by his wife Marcella; son Bill Spalding, Murdock, and Mike Spalding, Vancouver; grandsons Jesse, Jacob and Jeffrey; and many nephews, nieces, cousins and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, a baby daughter, and two brothers Howard and James Spalding.
Funeral services for Mr. Spalding will be held Thursday, June 28, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Erdman Funeral Home in Goldendale, with graveside services by the American Legion.
ZELMA DUGDALE
Zelma Ruth Dugdale, a former resident of White Salmon and Underwood, died June 22, 2001, of live cancer in Mary Ville, Mo., at the age of 69.
Survivors include children Deborah Marvin Fender, Omaha, Neb., Vicki Perez, Gravity, Iowa, and Cindy Morrow, Pickering, Mo.; son John "Johnny Del Ray" Dugdale; seven grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and nephew Jim Richardson and niece Lillian Wood, both of White Salmon.

W.T. SPERRY
Help celebrate W.T. Sperry's ride through life Aug. 1, 1913, to Jan. 6, 2001, at a potluck on July 7, 2001, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Elk Meadows RV Park BBQ area in Trout Lake.

VADA YARNELL
Vada Lucille Yarnell died in White Salmon, on June 21, 2001, at the age of 73.
Mrs. Yarnell was born on March 11, 1928, in Shaw, Lincoln County, Colo., to Nelson and Edna (Graves) Burgess. she lived in Glenwood from age 3 to 12. The family then settled in Bingen.
On June 15, 1944, she married Lenard Yarnell and they made their home at Charlie Swanson's place in Snowden. They later moved to a farm below the Swanson place.
Mrs. Yarnell was a dedicated homemaker. She enjoyed her family and friends, playing cards, dance club, watching school sports, making crafts and sewing. She also loved camping with family and with the Mount Adams Trailer club. She actively volunteered for the Health Fair, March of Dimes, Dorcas and the American Cancer Society. She was very community oriented and was always there to lend a hand when help was needed.
She is survived by her husband Lenard; sons Lenard "Butch" Yarnell, Vancouver, Herschel Yarnell, Battle Ground, and Mike Yarnell, Husum; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life service was held Monday, June 25, 2001, at Gardner Funeral Home in White Salmon.
