GINGER PAYNE
Ginger Payne, a 52-year-old resident of Wahkiacus, died Oct. 13, 2005, in McMinnville, Ore. She was born May 23, 1953, in Portland, Ore., to Frank Berl and Esther Marie Devoir Losey.
She was raised and schooled in Gladstone, Ore. She graduated high school from Columbia Academy in Battle Ground. She also attended college at Pacific Union College in Angwin, Calif., and graduated in education and psychology. She then took nursing training and practiced as a nurse for several years in Portland.
She married Gerald Payne on May 5, 1978, in Gladstone, Ore. She lived in Portland, Newberg, and The Dalles, before moving to Wahkiacus 13 years ago. She taught school for four years in Klickitat.
She also taught piano lessons, was an excellent singer and loved to bake bread.
Survivors include husband Gerald Payne, Wahkiacus; sons Nathan and Michael Payne, both of Salem, Ore.; daughters Abbie Payne, Garden Valley, Idaho, and Sarah Payne, Wahkiacus; parents Esther and Frank Losey, Gresham, Ore.; sister Vickie Dunafon, Oregon City, Ore. and Dianna Enslie, Pocatello, Idaho.
Services will be held Saturday, Oct. 22, 2005, at 1:30 p.m. at Orchards Seventh-day Adventist Church, Orchards, Wash., with Pastor John Wesslen officiating.
GRACE WOODRUFF
Grace Effie (Browning) Woodruff died Oct. 7, 2005, in White Salmon. She was born Nov. 20, 1926, in Corvallis, Mont., the second daughter of Fred and Charlotte (Roderick) Browning.
She spent her younger years moving to Wenatchee, Granger and Battle Ground, then on to Ontario, Ore. She attended high school at Gem State Academy in Caldwell, Idaho, and graduated in 1947.
She met J. Melvin Woodruff that same year and they were married June 1, 1948, in an outdoor ceremony at Wahkiacus, where they lived until 1995, at which time they moved to White Salmon, to live with their son. They spent 57 happy years together.
Her career was raising her family and doing the bookkeeping for their sawmill operated all their working lives in partnership with Lawrence and Violet Woodruff at Wahkiacus.
She always enjoyed family gatherings and went to every one that came up. She also fondly remembers going to camp meeting at Gladstone, Ore., since the age of 3 years, missing very few of them until the last few years.
She was preceded in death by one brother, James Browning, and one grandson, Carl Hermo.
She is survived by her husband Melvin, aunt Ruby Cornelius, Battle Ground; three sisters and four bothers Ethel Wall, Portland, Ore., Violet and Alyce Woodruff of Wahkiacus, Francis Browning, Spray, Ore., and Robert, Keith and Lawrence Browning of Goldendale; seven children, Betty Lanz, Battle Ground, Judy Miller, College Place, Merrie Bel Woodruff, Battle Ground, John Woodruff, White Salmon, James Woodruff, Wahkiacus, LaVina Dennis, White Salmon, and Jessie Woodruff, Wahkiacus; 13 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and multitudes of nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were held at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in White Salmon, on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2005. Memorials may be given to Hospice of the Gorge.
ROBERT WOODS
84-year-old Robert Newton Woods died at his home in Murdock on Sept. 19, 2005. He was born in Kansas to Adeline (Layman) and John Franklin Woods on Oct. 7, 1920.
As a boy, Mr. Woods moved with his family from Kansas to Missouri, where he was raised. He met Freda Alberta Gwendolyn Cassel, or Gwen as she was known, and the couple married on Jan. 10, 1942. Shortly after their wedding, he entered the Army, serving for four years in the South Pacific during World War II. After his military service, Mr. Woods returned to Missouri. The Woods family moved to Corvallis, Ore., where he worked in a lumber mill. They later lived in White Salmon, Bingen, and Stevenson where Mr. Woods served those cities as a police officer. He also owned and operated second-hand stores. In 1983, he retired to High Prairie.
Mr. Woods liked to fish, garden and also enjoyed cooking, baking pies and canning fruits and vegetables. He loved to tinker in his shop. His shop was a getaway, a place to just go and hang out, especially with his grandson. Mr. Woods was a content man who never complained, no matter what situation he found himself in.
Survivors include his son Keith Woods, Murdock; daughter Sandra Kay Lofthus, Stevenson; brothers Johnny and Edgar Woods and sister Adeline Bradley, all of Missouri; grandchildren Kevin Woods, Kurt Woods, Angela McCafferty and Heidi Oliver; and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Gwen, his brother Posey Woods and his sister Vivian Mulligan.
The Woods family will celebrate Mr. Wood's life in a private family service later this year. Gardner Funeral Home handled cremation arrangements.

FLOYD VIALL
Floyd A. Viall died in Vancouver on Oct. 16, 2005. He was born in Richardson, N.D. on Dec. 15, 1917.
He was a retired carpenter, member of Carpenters Union of Washington for 40 years. He retired in 1982. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in White Salmon for 30 years, a member of the Eagles Lodge, a grange member, and a former Scoutmaster.
He enjoyed traveling all of the United States, Europe, Austria and Germany.
He is survived by two daughters Virginia MacKenzie and Ruth Bolstad; four sons, Floyd A Viall Jr., Dale E Viall, Wayne A Viall, and Ray D. Viall; 21 grandchildren and 18 greatgrandchildren.
