GLENN R. MATTSON
Glenn Mattson, a 42-year resident of Parkdale, Ore., died March 21, 2002, one day short of his 90th birthday, at his home at 7680 Baseline Road, in the house he and his beloved wife Annabell built of timber from their farm in 1985.
A memorial service will be held at the Parkdale Baptist Church on Dee Highway, at 11 a.m. on March 30, with a potluck dinner to follow.
Glenn R. Mattson was born the third son of Herman Amel and Ida Arelia (Kidwell) Mattson, on March 22, 1912, in Butte City, Calif., in Glenn County.
After the death of his father in 1925, he moved with his mother and brother Elmo to Yakima, Wash. He grew up there, and in Idaho where they also had relatives.
Glenn married F. Annabell Record on Oct. 28, 1935, in Walla Walla, Wash. They had three daughters while living in Yakima, Wash. In 1946 they moved to Lyons, Ore. He farmed 100 acres there, while working at different mills, and working his own small saw mill.
In January of 1955 the family moved to Parkdale, Ore., where he and Annabell farmed 40 acres, and he worked for Sheldon Lawrence Orchards Inc. until he retired in 1975.
Glenn is survived by his daughters Patsy Cannon, Alta Bryan, and Carolyn Romey, 21 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife F. Annabell in 1997, his parents, and both brothers.

ROBERT O. LEE
Robert O. Lee, an international explorer and mountaineer died on March 20, 2002, in Portland, Ore.
Lee was born in Seattle, Wash. on Nov. 2, 1921, and was educated at the University of Washington in Seattle and Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif. His early business career was spent with the Bell System. In 1956 he joined Georgia Pacific Corporation and in 1969 was awarded the GP President's Achievement Award for his contribution to the success of the corporation. He retired in 1973 as Vice-President and member of their Operating Policy Committee.
Robert lived in Parkdale, Ore., and was co-owner of Cooper Spur ski resort in the 1970s.
Mountaineering, exploration, ecology and education were the central focus of his life. He was a member of over twenty major international expeditions, some of which he led. These included the American Talung Himalayan Expedition, Argentine International Aconcagua Expedition, American Quintana Roo Expeditions of 1965, 66, 67 and 68, and the C.E.D.A.M. Mesquital Expedition in the unexplored "grand" canyon of Northern Mexico. His explorations took him to many of the remote and unexplored areas of Asia, Africa, South and Central America. He climbed over 250 major mountain peaks, a number of which were first ascents, and also was a member of the National Ski Patrol and the National Association of the 10th Mountain Division, 85th Regiment.
His memberships include: American Alpine Club, New York City; Explorer's Club, New York City; South American Explorer's Club, Denver, Colorado; Club de Exploracoines y Deportes Aguaticos, Mexico City; Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Darjeeling, India; and life member East African Wildlife Society of Tropical Biology.
He was the founder and first president of the Columbia River Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America and recipient of the National PRSA Silver Anvil Award. He was also a life member of the Seattle Yacht Club.
As an artist, Lee's works as painter and printmaker have been exhibited in the Seattle, San Francisco and Portland Art Museums, Henry Gallery in Seattle, New York City Museum of Modern Art, Chicago Art Institute and other galleries and museums in the United States.
Robert O. Lee is survived by his wife, Suzanne of Portland; son, Robert Edward Lee of Gresham, Ore.; daughter, Katherine Steadman, Mission Viejo, CA.; grandson, Chris Newlin and great-granddaughter, Rylee Newlin, Valapriso, Ind.
Memorial service will be held at Agnes Flanagan Chapel, Lewis & Clark College on Sunday, April 14 at 3 p.m. Gifts and remembrances are to be made to the Casey Eye Institute, Oregon Health and Science University, Portland.
JOHN LEON VANN
Former Hood River resident John Leon Vann died Sunday, March 24, 2002, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland, Ore. He was 62 years of age.
A funeral service was held Thursday, March 28 at Anderson's Tribute Center with a graveside service following at Idlewild Cemetery.
John Leon Vann was born Aug. 3, 1939 in Claremore, Okla., to John Richard and Elsie Ann (Wilson) Vann. He spent part of his childhood in Oklahoma, and then at the age of 6 he moved to Hood River, Ore. John Leon attended schools here and eventually graduated from Hood River Valley High School in 1958.
John Leon left the Hood River Valley and moved to Portland, Ore., where he worked for Albertson's in the produce department for several years. In the early 1980s he left Albertson's to open The Flower Mill, a floral shop in Gresham, Ore. John Leon continued working for various florists in the Portland area as a floral designer up until his death.
Reading was one of John Leon's favorite things to do. He also enjoyed spending time researching his culture, the Cherokee Tribe.
John Leon Vann is survived by his sister Sue Lavoie of Henderson, Nev., brothers Wesley Vann of Hood River, and Billy Vann of The Dalles, Ore. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Grover Vann, sister Joanne Guenther and half-brother Jeff Vann.

HARVEY MANSFIELD
Lifelong White Salmon resident, Charles Harvey Mansfield, 77, passed away at his home on March 23, 2002.
Harvey was born in Hood River, Ore., on April 21, 1924, the son of Charles E. and Mary (Dunn) Mansfield. He grew up in White Salmon and after graduating from Columbia High School, worked in the shipyards of Portland until he joined the Army.
While in the Army, Harvey served as MP and lab technician overseas and in the states. After his discharge from the Army, Mr. Mansfield attended Portland State University, taking business classes at night.
He began working at Hiway Hardware in Bingen, Wash., and from 1960 to 1984, owned the business, which was then known as Mansfield's Hardware and Furniture.
During his business years, Harvey belonged to Rotary, the Lions Club, Elks, and served on the Skyline Hospital Board and his church board.
Mr. Mansfield was a private pilot from 1947 to 1965 and this love of flight showed in his hobby of building and flying radio-controlled airplanes.
Harvey enjoyed numerous outdoor activities, such as hiking, fishing snow and water skiing and tennis. He also liked to travel.
Survivors include his wife, Verna, of White Salmon, daughters Diana Ottman of Beldenville, Wis., Annetta Lee Driscoll of Vancouver, Wash., and Lori Mansfield of Everett, Wash.
He is also survived by his brother, Richard Mansfield of White Salmon, five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Harvey was preceded in death by his sister, Virginia Cummings, and his brother, Robert Mansfield

JEANNE E. JOHNSON
Jeanne E. Johnson, a Sublimity, Ore., resident, died at age 81 on March 22, 2002.
Jeanne was born in Minot, N.D. on Jan. 24, 1921. She married Les on Dec. 24, 1940 in Vancouver, Wash. He preceded her in death on Oct. 10, 2000.
She resided in Parkdale and Hood River before settling in Stayton in 1966. She was a loving mother, wife and grandmother. She was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church and the Old Time Fiddlers Association. She enjoyed traveling and gardening.
She is survived by her daughter, Donna Killen, of Salem, Ore., granddaughters Jill Burch of Weiser, Idaho, and Jode Dawson of Ashland, Ore., and grandson Sean Dawson of Ashland.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Private interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

ESTHER M. SHEPHERD
Hood River resident Esther M. Shepherd, passed away on March 23, 2002, at her home at Down Manor, where she was a resident for 13 1/2 years. She was 101 years of age.
Esther was the second born of nine brothers and sisters to Andrew and Mary (Larson) Monson on Feb. 15, 1901, in Sisseton, S.D. She grew up in the farming area of Sisseton, SD. On coming to Willmar, Minn., she attended Buttons Business College and then did secretarial work until 1926 when she left for Portland, Ore.
She met Ronald Shepherd in Portland, Ore. and they were married on June 10, 1933. Esther and Ronald loved the outdoors. They camped and hiked trails over the Northwest and one hike took them to the summit of Mt. Hood. On Nov. 18, 1937, Ronald and Esther shared the joy of their son Jack's birth.
In 1941 they moved to Bremerton, Wash., where Ronald worked as an engineer at the Naval Shipyard during the war years. Then in 1943 they located in Allyn, Wash., where they eventually built a motel on the bay of Case Inlet near the outlet waters of Sherwood Creek. Ronald continued to work at the shipyard and Esther operated the motel.
In 1962 Esther and Ronald sold the motel and with a travel trailer, roamed extensively throughout the United States and Canada and eventually landed in Redmond, Ore., in 1972.
In 1976 they moved to the Woodburn Estates until Esther was widowed in 1988. Later that year Esther came to Hood River to be close to her family and has resided in Down Manor where after a short period of time felt very much at home. She developed many many friendships and became active in quilting, recreation, civic club and library.
Esther is survived by her son, Jack Shepherd, and his wife, Linda, of Hood River, Ore, sister Mariam Monson of Minneapolis, Minn., grandsons Tom Shepherd and Rick Shepherd of Hood River, granddaughter Laura Baxter of Kirkland, Wash., extended grandsons David Ryan of Hood River, and Albert Ryan of Portland, Ore., and numerous great-grandchildren.
Esther endured the loss of her husband, five brothers and three sisters.

CATHERINE M. WINANS
Dee Resident Catherine Marie Winans died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at the Hood River Care Center. She was 90 years old.
Visitation was scheduled for Friday, March 22, from 4-7 p.m. at Anderson's Tribute Center Services will be on Monday, March 25, at 10 a.m. at Anderson's Tribute Center with a graveside to follow at Idlewild Cemetery.
Catherine was born on Dec. 21, 1911, in Antioch, Calif., to Juan de Besoain and Julia Aletha (Middleton) Besoain. Catherine spent most of her childhood in Antioch. She spent her early years in the San Francisco area moving to Portland, Ore., in 1922 with her family.
On April 15, 1931, she married Linn Winans at a small community church in Gresham, Ore. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Dee, Ore., to begin their new life.
Catherine was a homemaker who enjoyed raising her four children. She also had a large vegetable garden to provide a food supply for the winter months. In later years her vegetable garden was replaced by beautiful flower gardens. Roses were her specialty.
Catherine was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother Don, and sister Genevieve Davis.
She is survived by her four children: Shirley Bolden of Levelland, Texas, Rita Durham, David Winans, and Linn Winans, all of Hood River, Ore., 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. A sister, Ann Gagne, of Castro Valley, Calif., also survives.

HAZEL A. FERGUSON
Hazel Anna Ferguson, a Hood River, Ore., resident, died March 21, 2002, at her residence, she was 96 years of age.
Hazel Anna Ferguson was born in Town of Center, Outagamie County, Wis., on Sept. 10, 1905. She was the first daughter of Edwin Herman Wisthoff and Emma Otilie Hartworm. The family lived in Appleton, Wis. during her early childhood.
In July of 1913, at age seven, she moved with her family to Eastern Montana where her father had filed a homestead claim near Wason Flats, Montana, located about 65 miles north of Miles City, Mont.
She has shared many stories of life on the prairie, living in a sod house for several years, riding horseback several miles to school as education became available, attending box socials and country dances, and attending high school in Miles City, 65 miles from home.
On July 24, 1926, she married Roy Ferguson of Pendleton, Oregon at Washougal, Wash. They resided in Pendleton for three years before returning to Wason Flats, Mont., and later to Van Norman, Mont. Two children were born to this union, a daughter, Shirley and a son, Gale.
In 1944 the family moved to Miles City, Mont., and she lived there until 1978. She was widowed in 1964 and later moved to Hood River in 1978 where she lived until her death.
Her activities in life centered mainly on her family and church service. She was accomplished in domestic skills, especially crocheting, quilting, sewing and homemaking skills. She enjoyed traveling with her family and had opportunities to travel to Europe, Mexico and Canada as well as throughout the U.S.
Her husband, Roy Ferguson, her parents, Edwin and Emma Wisthoff and her sister, Pearl Defferding, preceded Hazel Anna Ferguson in death. She is survived by a daughter, Shirley Pearson of Lynnwood, Wash. and a son, Gale Ferguson of Hood River.
He is also survived by 10 grandchildren: Roy Ferguson of Albuquerque, N.M., Jon Ferguson of Odell, Ore., Denna Hurd of Las Cruces, N.M., Paul Ferguson of Odell, Ross Pearson of Issaquah, Wash, Judy Ferguson of Odell, Janet Morris of Redmond, Ore., Kari Pearson of Roseville, Calif., Jodi Teeples of Honolulu, Hawaii, Jerenda Ferguson of Tualatin, Ore., and 18 great grandchildren.
