Gladys was born in Burt, Iowa, on July 7, 1913, to Mads and Lillian Dransfeldt. When she was a young girl the family moved to Hollywood, Calif., then to the Willamette Valley, Ore. She also lived for many years in Parkdale, Ore., Yakima, Wash., and San Bruno and San Mateo, Calif., before moving back to Oregon in 2000.

She was the proud lynchpin of her family, and though she herself received but an eighth-grade education, she insisted that all her daughters go to college. She was a great mother, a wonderful cook, farmer and homemaker, a fast apple and pear-packer and an insatiable reader.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings: Helen Molloy, Merle Maurer and Roland Dransfeldt; husbands Clarence Starr and Earl Peugh; step-daughter, Anita Wright, and son-in-law, Norman Wright. She is survived by her daughters and extended family, including David Jones, Van Dyke Roth and Lorraine McIntyre; her three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren of the Wright/McIn-tosh/Olsen branch of the family tree who will all miss her easy-going, feisty, wicked sense of humor and her stubbornness when she was right.

A memorial service, to continue to honor and revere her in the manner to which she has become accustomed, will be held at a later date.

Dennis Dean

Dennis Ellsworth Dean, of Redmond, Ore., died Nov. 11, 2002, in Bend, Ore. He was 74 years of age.

Dennis was born Nov. 11, 1928, in Baker, Ore. He served in the U.S. Army as Sgt. 1st Class, where he earned a Korean Service medal and UN Ribbon, Army Occupation, Japan. He was production manager for Hood River Distillery for over 30 years. He also owned Bebo’s Candy in Hood River.

Dennis moved to Redmond in 1984. On Sept. 13, 1990, he married Betty Ebeling in Reno, Nev.

He was a member of the Elks, American Legion, and the Eagles fraternities. He was a voracious reader and loved playing golf.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Betty; a son, Michael Dean of Wilsonville, Ore.; a daughter, Thea Dean of Lincoln City, Ore.; and one grandchild.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Summit High School in Bend, or Redmond Junior High in Redmond.

Roderic Landis

Roderic Martin Landis went to be with his Lord on Oct. 25, 2002, in Spokane, Wash. He was 93 years of age.

Roderic was born in China on Aug. 30, 1909, to missionary parents. He, too, became a missionary of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church and served in the Philippines for 43 years. He retired from mission work in 1974, remaining active as a speaker and pastor for many years.

Rod and his first wife, Audrey Cooper Landis, lived in Hood River and their children attended Barrett School. Audrey was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Cooper.

Roderic is survived by his wife of 23 years, Helen Peterson Landis of Spokane; daughter, Pat Landis of Newberg, Ore.; and sons, Dick Landis of Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Paul Landis of Portland, Ore., and their wives. He had three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Rod is also survived by members of his wife’s family: Dr. David Petersen and Kristen Smith of Spokane and Dr. James Petersen of Seattle and their families; and the family of Helen’s deceased son, Alan. Rod has two living brothers, 98-year-old Fred and his wife, Gwen, of Salem, Ore., and Esli Landis of Calif. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Audrey, after 48 years of marriage.

Grant Bailey

Grant Covert Bailey, 32, died Oct. 15, 2002, in a private plane accident. Grant was born May 28, 1970, in Boston, but soon moved to Moraga, Calif., where he was raised. He moved to Newberg, Ore., to live with his father and finished high school at Tigard High School. He attended Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Ariz., and graduated with a degree in Aeronautical Science. He lived for a time in Hood River County.

On Aug. 19, 1995, Grant married Cari Arnot in Whitefish, Mont. Grant and Cari kept busy moving across the country to places including Arizona, Pennsylvania, Portland, Bend, and Idaho. Always he was a devoted husband who would fix, build or soften the world for his wife.

Grant loved to share his passion for life with others. Whether it was rock climbing, backcountry skiing, kayaking, windsurfing, business ideas or flying, Grant was a fanatic and wanted everyone to join in his enthusiasm. Anything that interested him he took to the max. He learned everything he could. He was a fanatic, a lover of life.

Grant’s joy for life doubled with the birth of his son, Marshall, in May of 2001. Grant adored Marshall and was teaching him early to enjoy the sports that Grant loved so much. One of Marshall’s favorite play toys is Grant’s new kayak, which he and Marshall climbed and played on in the middle of the living room floor.

Grant worked for Lancair of Redmond for the last several years as a pilot and in sales. In August of this year, Grant took a job with Chelton Flight Systems and moved to Boise, Idaho. He was the marketing and communications manager and director of training. He was enthusiastic about his new job and showed great promise.

One of Grant’s favorite places was the Gorge. He was an avid windsurfer and loved spending time with friends out on the river or with family in the upper valley.

Grant will always be remembered and missed by his wife, Cari Bailey and son, Marshall Bailey, of Boise, Idaho; his father, Covert Bailey of Newberg; his mother, Sally Bailey of Mount Hood; and his sister, Christina McGhee and her husband John McGhee, of Parkdale.

A memorial service was held at Westside Church in Bend on Oct. 19. An educational fund has been established for Marshall. Additional information may be found at www.caapilots.com.

Lucy Fortesque

Hood River resident Lucy Alice Fortesque died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital. She was 74 years of age.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at 4 p.m. at Anderson’s Tribute Center. Visitation will be Saturday, Nov. 16, from noon until 3:30 p.m. at Anderson’s Tribute Center. Private interment will follow at Idlewild Cemetery.

Lucy was born June 12, 1928, to Jesse Curtis and Delores (Balcom) Washington in Scottsbluff, Neb. She was raised and educated in Gooding, Idaho, and was later married in Boise, Idaho.

Once here in Hood River, Ore., she raised her family and worked seasonally for Diamond Fruit Company. Following that line of work Mrs. Fortesque worked as a head cook for the Hood River Care Center and then for St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Yakima, Wash.

Mrs. Fortesque enjoyed spending her spare time bowling until her health forced her to stop. She then became heavily involved with the Senior Companion Program (through Hood River Memorial Hospital.) Serving with this program she visited people at their homes, took them to doctor’s visits and helped them run errands. Lucy had a great love for serving people.

Some of Mrs. Fortesque’s interests included collecting dolls, and assembling large puzzles. She attended the Hood River Assembly of God Church for years and most recently attended the Hood River 7th Day Adventist Church.

Mrs. Fortesque is survived by her daughters Paulette Rushin of Emmett, Idaho, Evalena Baer of Gresham, Ore., Linda Sharkey of Spokane, Wash., Debra Woods of Portland, Ore., sons Timothy Wingerd of Hood River, and James ‘Eddie’ Fortesque of Hood River, sister Lorraine Gonzales of Sacramento, Calif, 20 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sherman Hinkle

Hood River resident Sherman Hinkle died Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, at Eastmoreland Hospital in Portland, Ore,. He was 82 years of age.

A private family gathering was held Friday at Anderson’s Tribute Center, followed by private interment at Idlewild Cemetery.

Sherman was born Nov. 29, 1919, in Barbersville, Ky. He was raised in Kentucky and later graduated from Barbersville High School. Once out of school Mr. Hinkle joined the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII. He was stationed in Corvallis, Ore. Mr. Hinkle was part of a crew that flew supplies across enemy lines in Japan.

Upon honorable discharge from the military Mr. Hinkle returned to the United States to work as a welder for Ford Motor Company in Detroit, Mich. He then married Cuthrena Couch on August 12, 1967, in Detroit. Together they shared 35 wonderful years of marriage. Following Mr. Hinkle’s retirement in 1983 he and his wife moved to Hood River, Ore., where they have lived ever since.

Some of Mr. Hinkle’s hobbies included reading books; magazines, newspapers or whatever he could gets his hands on. He also enjoyed playing cards, watching sports on television and was a member of the Hood River Elks.

Mr. Hinkle is survived by his wife, Cuthrena, of Hood River, OR and his sister-in-law Erma Couch of The Dalles, Ore.

Fred Shestak

Fred Shestak, 93, died Oct. 5, 2002, in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Fred was born Jan. 30, 1909, in Wilber, Neb. He graduated from Wilber High School, received a BS degree from Peru State Teachers College, Peru, Neb., and a Masters degree in Education from the University of Oregon. He spent 42 years in the education profession as a coach, an educator and an administrator. Early years were in Nebraska, Wyoming and Colorado. Then he moved to Hood River, where he spent 28 years. He retired in 1973, in Rockaway Beach, Ore., after 7 years as principal of Neah-Kah-Nie High School.

Fred married his college sweetheart, Maxine Sears, in 1930. They had one daughter, Donna Lee. He was a member of King Solomon Masonic Lodge No. 30 of Colorado; Order of Eastern Star, Columbia Chapter No. 23, The Dalles, Ore.; and BPO Elks Lodge 1437, Tillamook, Ore.

Fred liked to travel, golf, dance, listen to polka music and watch sports. He also loved fishing, hunting, clamming, beachcombing and playing cribbage. He enjoyed life.

Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Maxine; daughter Donna and her husband, Jim, and their children, Mike, Jimmy, Donny and Carrie; nine great-grandchildren; sister Mildred Weiner; brother Frank; and several nieces and nephews.

Fred devoted his life to helping young people obtain their goals in life. He believed “where there is a will, there is a way, but you must be willing to work to get there.”

Rosemary Petri

Hood River resident Rosemary Petri died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, at the Parkhurst House. She was 85 years of age. Arrangements are pending at Anderson’s Tribute Center, 541-386-1000.
