Britta Knutson's 12-footer in the final half-minute of action here Dec. 13 gave Henkle Middle School's seventh-grade girls basketball team a 19-16 win over visiting Wind River.
The Grizzlies led until the fourth quarter, when the Royals rallied to tie the game at 16.
Still, the Grizzlies had chances to put the game away at the free-throw line but could do not better than a 17-16 lead before Knutson hit her biggest basket of the season.
Four of Henkle's starters fouled out in the fourth quarter, but the Grizzlies' bench held its own in securing the team's sixth win in nine tries.
At Henkle 26, Castle Rock 16 --
A balanced effort at both ends of the court resulted in a "team victory" for the Grizzlies here Dec. 11.
Eight of the team's 11 players scored and all 11 contributed tough minutes under the backboards and at the defensive end.
Sierra Larsen and Chani Weiler led the Grizzlies with five points each.
Chelsea Ludwig, Michelle Shrum and Kara Woosley bucketed four points apiece. Rebecca Wellman, Britta Knutson and Ashley Poole each had two points.
On the boards, Knutson, Shrum, Ludwig and Samantha Bakke came up big for the Grizzlies (5-3).
"This was a real team victory," Grizzlies Coach Michael Hannigan said. "Each player contributed to what was an excellent game."
Henkle steadily pulled away from Castle Rock, leading 6-2, 14-10 and 20-12 at the three quarter breaks.
Woodland 39, at Henkle 17 --
The Grizzlies fell behind 12-2 in the first quarter of their Dec. 6 home game and that was that.
Chasity Keller (7) and Chani Weiler (4) combined for 11 points to pace Henkle's offense, which came back to life in the third quarter after managing just six points in the first half.
"The hustle in the third quarter of Samantha Bakke, Britta Knutson, Katie Johnson and Rebecca Wellman really helped get our offense back on track," Hannigan noted.
The third quarter was the best of the game for Henkle (4-3), which put in eight points to Woodland's nine.
Bakke and Knutson each scored two points -- their only points of the game -- in that period.
Chelsea Ludwig also finished with two points and teamed with Kara Woosley to lead the team in rebounding.
"Woodland was the team to beat in our league and we held our own against them," Hannigan said.
