Saturday, July 14, 3 to 5 p.m. The Joy of Collecting: Sharon and Hank Martin.

Join collectors Sharon and Hank Martin as they discuss the joy they find in creating an art collection -- emphasizing their works of art on view in the exhibit The Subject is Light: The Henry and Sharon Martin Collection of Contemporary Realist Paintings. Elizabeth Ives Hunter, director of the Cape Cod Museum of Art in Dennis, Maine, will introduce Sharon and Hank. Also participating is one of the artists, Robert Douglas Hunter, who will speak about his own work in the exhibit and in the collection of Maryhill Museum of Art.

Saturday, July 21, 3 p.m. Shakespeare for Families: Twelfth Night.

Join the acclaimed Portland Actors Ensemble in Maryhill Museum of Art's garden for a performance of Shakespeare's beloved comedy of mistaken identity, Twelfth Night. Bring your own chair for the performance and a picnic to enjoy prior. Free on the grounds of the museum.

Thursday, July 26, 7 p.m. The Art of Living a Sustainable Life.

What does it mean to live a sustainable life, and how does one get started? What resources are available in our communities that help make a sustainable life possible? What are the advantages to living a sustainable life? Join a panel of recyclers, architects and educators for a compelling discussion of the issues around sustainable living. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. in the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust Education Center.

Monday, July 23 - Thursday, July 27. Summer Art Institute - Reuse, Recycle and Repurpose: Sustainability and Art.

Educators and art enthusiasts are invited to explore strategies for bringing enriching art experiences into the classroom in this week-long intensive filled with daily workshops, lectures, the study of original art and hands-on art sessions. Unique field trips, including studio visits and special events, make this an unforgettable art experience.

This year participants will look at sustainability in art -- exploring artists who reuse or recycle materials in their work, in addition to artists known for collage, assemblage and mixed-media.

Local artist Tom Herrera, a sculptor who makes one-of-a-kind works from found objects, will be the Institute's artist-in-residence. In addition Peggy Dills Kelter, artist and educator, will be joining the Institute staff. She has been a passionate recycler for over 40 years. Two years ago she became a certified Master Recycler.

The summer art institute is taught by Maryhill Executive Director Colleen Schafroth, an award-winning arts educator and author who helped develop and teach the art institute since it was established in 1993.

Course fee $210/non-credit, $270 for 30 clock hours through Washington ESD #105, or $375 for 3 credit hours through Portland State University Graduate School of Education/Continuing Education.

Arts Festival August 25 & 26

Maryhill Museum of Art's annual summer Arts Festival will feature over 50 artists displaying and selling their work, as well as live music, hands-on art for families, and food vendors offering lunch and dinner on Saturday and lunch on Sunday. Free on the grounds of the museum.

Hours are: Saturday, Aug. 25, 10 to 5 p.m.; Sunday, Aug. 26, 10 to 4 p.m.
