Fort Vancouver Regional Library District (FVRL) launched a redesigned and improved Web site on Monday, April 1.
The new pages offer a fresher look, improved accessibility for patrons with vision impairment and many new features. The address for the library Web site remains the same as in the past: www.fvrl.org.
The library district's Web site was originally launched in 1996 to bring the library catalog, licensed research databases, information resources and branch contact information into the three-county library district's homes, schools and businesses via the Internet. The site has undergone several updates and ongoing enhancements since then.
"It was time for us to update the entire site to make our on-line services more user-friendly for all patrons," said Bruce Ziegman, FVRL executive director. In addition to a more intuitive navigation structure and a site search engine, the new pages were built to be easily translated by text-to-voice software programs used by vision-impaired patrons, and are easily navigated by patrons with limited fine-motor movement.
New features on the site include home pages for individual branch libraries, searchable library events, a searchable listing of new books available at the library, home-page news bulletins, searchable news releases and archives, resources in Spanish and a handy selection of "quick links." As in the past, the site provides users with library cards 24-hour access to the district's catalog of more than 750,000 items. The site also offers valuable on-line databases, including ProQuest (local and national newspapers, periodicals), Gale Group (authors, biographies, Books in Print), NoveList (reader recommendations), health & Wellness Reference Center, Business & Company Resource Center, Reference USA, Acxiom Infobase telephone directory, and Electric Library (homework resources).
The district will continue to provide access to a text-based catalog via direct dial-up modem, for patrons who don't have Internet access from their home computers.
Patrons are encouraged to send in their comments to the library district about the Web site changes. The district plans to continue to fine-tune the navigation and content of the site as suggestions are received.
