LKW ran for a season-best 342 yards against host Touchet Friday afternoon but came up short on the scoreboard, 50-18, in non-league eight-man football action.
Ty Freemantle accounted for 178 of those rushing yards (a career high for the senior back) and scored on big runs of 95 and 59 yards--both in the fourth quarter and long after the result had been determined.
Workhorse fullback Henry Matai added 150 yards in the ground game and got the Cougars (1-4) on the scoreboard in the second quarter with a 75-yard touchdown run that pulled LKW within 13-6 of the Indians (4-1).
But Touchet's Taylor Gregg took over the contest on the ensuing kickoff, running it back 88 yards to give the Indians a two-touchdown-plus advantage. He would score again on a run and on a pass and finish the first half with four touchdowns and his team in front, 36-6.
The second half was more of the same for the Cougars as Gregg returned the opening kickoff 78 yards for his fifth TD, which Juan Castillo followed with the sixth of his seven successful point-after- touchdown conversions.
LKW finished the game with 372 yards of total offense--most of it coming on the three big scoring plays--but hurt its cause by losing two fumbles and getting penalized seven times for 55 yards.
Touchet accumulated 413 yards of offense in 51 plays--a better than 8 yards per play average-- turned the ball over just once and committed two penalties.
Gregg led the way for the Indians, totaling 139 yards (80 rush, 59 receiving) from scrimmage.
Touchet quarterback Gus Rodriguez added 126 yards through the air--40 on the TD pass to Gregg--on 7-of-8 attempts.
Coming Up:
The Cougars play the Indians later this month in Lyle, in a Halloween night game that will count in Southeast 1B League standings. In the meantime, LKW must take on SE 1B opponent St. John/Endicott this Friday night in St. John.
