When he touched the wall at the finish of his 1650-yard freestyle race in Molalla, Ore., Feb. 7, Scott Bergstrom of Snowden achieved a milestone in his Hood River Valley Swim Team career.
The 14-year-old completed the endurance swim for boys 13 and over in 17 minutes, 9.14 seconds to establish a new team age-group record (by 8.11 seconds) in the event. Moreover, his time met the Oregon `A' Meet and Senior Sectional qualifying standards, HRVST Coach Shelly Rawding noted.
Bergstrom, who placed first in three of five swims (with five Oregon `A' times), also set a new team age-group record in the 200 freestyle (1:53.93) at the two-day Last Chance meet for state qualifying.
Mariah Rawding of Husum won all five of her 11-12 age group swims in Oregon `A' times. Of the two personal records she logged at the meet, the 12-year-old made the greatest improvement in the 400 individual medley, finishing in 5:05.68--29.41 seconds faster than her previous best time.
Anna Anderson of Snowden also had a busy weekend in the pool Feb. 7-8, competing in eight girls 13-and-over events at the Last Chance meet. The 18-year-old won three of them (100 back stroke in PR time, 200 breast in `A' meet time, 100 breast) and placed second in three and third in two.
Matt Bergstrom, 12, Snowden, finished first in three 11-12 age group events, had two Oregon `A' times (in 50 butterfly and 500 freestyle) and two PRs (in 100 IM and 500 free).
The highlights for Jena Bergstrom, 6, Snowden, included first-place efforts in the 25 free and 25 breast for girls 6-and-under and three PRs.
On the boys side, Collin Trummel, 6, White Salmon posted second-place times in both of his freestyle 6-and-under events, while Aidan Trummel, 10, was a model of consistency with four seventh-place efforts (including three PRs).
