HRV boys dial up dual defeats on road trip

But poor shooting, both from the field and from the line, spelled defeats of 58-35 to Redmond on Friday, and 63-31 to Bend on Saturday.

“Overall, it was not a great weekend for us,” coach Phil Vesel said. “Offensively, we struggled both games, and we weren’t able to run our plays effectively.”

Senior point guard and leading scorer Andy Holmson was only able to muster a combined 15 points, and was the lone HRV player to reach double digits in the two-game set (10 on Friday).

Senior power forward Todd Shypertt led the Eagles on Saturday with six points, and was followed by Holmson, Mitchell Bohn and Heath Goin with five apiece; Ryan Pratt and Tyler Monzie with four points each; and Jarrod Fogle with two.

Holmson led the way on Friday with 10 points, while Goin chipped in eight, and Sam Murillo and Shypertt had four apiece. Pete Dills (3), Monzie (2), Bohn (2) and Pratt (2) rounded out the scoring against the top-ranked Panthers, who boast the league’s top scorer, Maarty Leunen.

Murillo, Fogle and Monzie ran the “one-three chaser” defense on the 6-foot, 9-inch Leunen, and held him to his season average of 22 points.

Saturday’s game had far fewer bright spots, however. The Eagles never got within 10 points after the opening quarter, and suffered through a 35-15 run in the second half — a run which negated a strong second quarter effort.

The Eagles (4-8; 0-2 IMC) will try to regroup this weekend with home dates against Crook County on Friday and Summit on Saturday. They played Hermiston on the road Tuesday, but results were not available at press time.

“At this point, we are defending pretty well,” Vesel said. “We just need to start making some shots. With two home games this week and a few more practices, I believe we can get our offense going.”

Also of note, sophomore point guard Dennis Methvin saw his first varsity action over the weekend.
