Hood River photographer, Richard Hallman, was awarded "top mountain landscape photograph" at the International Banff Mountain Photography Competition!
The award is given by the Banff Centre in conjunction with National Geographic. Seventeen winning images were selected from over 4,000 submissions by photographers in 20 countries.
Columbia Art Gallery in Hood River is proud to display the winning image titled "Illumination Rock" in the gallery during the month of July.
The photograph was taken in April 2008 on a Mt. Hood climb. Hollman describes the experience saying, "it was a dreary late spring day with massive clouds down low. I began to climb -- breaking through the clouds soon after leaving Timberline Lodge. The route is straight forward to the top and takes anywhere from a few to several hours depending on conditions (and how many photos I am taking). Climbing is a peaceful time for me -- and each time out leaves me feeling centered and rejuvenated."
"From the summit, I began my descent back into the clouds which had worked their way up the mountain and surrounded Illumination Rock with an eerie/surreal glow. I stayed at that spot for some time and watched as the clouds silently swirled around the peak...I snapped several pictures, although I feel this one best captured the emotion of the moment. It was a magical moment, one of many I have had the fortune of experiencing in the mountains."
