Honeyford letter helps post office;maintain its presence in Husum
Thanks to a letter from state Sen. Jim Honeyford, the Washington DNR agrees to extend lease allowing for Husum post office to remain in its current location.
On April 4, officials of the Washington Department of Natural Resources agreed to extend the lease allowing the Husum post office to remain in its current location.
State Sen. Jim Honeyford, whose district includes Husum, sent a letter to Commissioner of Public Lands Doug Sutherland on March 28 in an effort to get lease negotiations concerning the post office on track.
"The Husum post office provides an important service to the local community," Honeyford wrote to Sutherland. "Therefore, I respectfully request that you revisit the lease arrangement right away, and allow the Husum post office to remain in operation without interruption of service. Time is of the essence."
Following the decision by the DNR to enter into longer-range negotiations with Gross on the existing site, Honeyford said he was happy.
"I am pleased that DNR recognizes what an important community service the Husum post office provides, and is working with us to keep it open," said Honeyford, a Republican who lives in Sunnyside.
The DNR had terminated its lease with building owner Judy Gross late last year in an effort to encourage the U.S. Postal Service to build a larger and more modern facility elsewhere in Husum. But when the Postal Service announced severe budget cutbacks, funding for a new structure fell though.
In the aftermath of that decision, Gross was offered only a one-year lease extension to allow the existing post office building to operate at its current site.
Fears that Husum would be left without a post office led some residents to contact Honeyford to request his assistance in keeping the post office open. Had the lease not been extended, residents of the Husum area would have had to travel to White Salmon or Trout Lake to get their mail.
The new lease runs though February 2002, but ongoing negotiations are expected to lead to a significant extension.
