In celebration of White Salmon's Centennial join the White Salmo Community Library as it hosts "100 Years of Basketry: messages from the Native People of the Mid-Columbia River."
The program will be presented by Mary Schlick on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 2 p.m. in the Sprint/Baker Gallery.
Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Library.
Baskets, like books, carry messages from those who made them. Using slides and basketry examples, Schlick will talk about the history to be discovered in the various forms of basketry made and used by the Native people of the mid-Columbia River. A selection of Klikitat baskets [or baskets made by Klikitat weavers] also will be on display at the library during September and October.
Schlick's interest in basketry developed during more than 50 years living among the Native people of the Columbia Plateau. She received an Oregon Governor's Arts Award in 1998 for support of Native arts. Schlick is author of Columbia River Basketry: Gift of the Ancestors, Gift of the Earth (1994) and a memoir, Coming to Stay: A Columbia River Journey (2007).
