All parents have concerns about what to do when their child gets sick or has a minor injury.
Frequent questions, especially for new parents are, "Is it serious? Do I need to go to the doctor or emergency room? Should my child go to school or childcare?"
With generous funding from the Gorge Community Foundation-Joan Burchell Fund, the Skamania Klickitat Community Network is purchasing and providing copies of the book What To Do When Your Child Gets Sick at no cost to local health care providers.
The next time parents living in Skamania or Klickitat County visit their doctor or health care provider in White Salmon, Stevenson or Goldendale, it may be possible they will receive a free book that will help them learn more about when to call the doctor, or when and how they can care for their young child's minor ailments or injuries at home, saving them an unnecessary trip to the doctor, lost time at work and the expense of a visit.
Parents or caregivers with young children can learn about common illnesses and injuries, basic items for a first-aid kit at home and general information on how to keep their child safe and well.
Offered in both English and Spanish, dozens of familiar subjects are covered, from cradle cap to colds, ear infections to upset stomachs, fevers and flu. The book is in an easy to read format, with clear and simple instructions accompanied by drawings that explain each topic.
The Skamania Klickitat Community Network works in local communities to reduce incidents of adverse childhood experiences, including abuse, neglect and family violence.
