Well, this won't be much of a column. Like everyone else, I suppose, I spent the weekend outside. I was working ever so happily in the garden and chicken yard. I can just imagine how many other great things everyone found to do -- sport events, hikes, sitting and reading, can you golf this time of year? It was a terrific weekend, for sure, but it didn't lend itself to doing research for the column. So here goes what you have sent. Please send more. And where are you, new newswriter? Step forward.
I was so sorry to miss Jim White's Jupiter and four moons viewing event at the school this weekend. I'll bet it was spectacular viewing, at least Friday night.
You have your choice of more great stuff for next weekend, Saturday, Oct. 9. You'll have to hustle to get to two of them, since they are both at 4 p.m. Food offered at both events, though, so make the effort and skip cooking. You'll be hungry by that time of day.
You can take a drive on over to Glenwood and attend the Mt. Adams Resource Stewards barbeque and open house, starting at 4 p.m. at the park west of the Glenwood Grange. Mt. Adams Resource Stewards is involved with a number of projects linking sustainable forestry, economic development and rural community revitalization and would welcome more input from the Trout Lake Community. Our own Jim White is on the board. If you don't know about the group, call Jim or go to http://www.mtadamsstewards.org/about.html and look around.
Then, right here in Trout Lake, you can attend the CSA harvest wrap-up party, also starting at 4. The CSA will be cooking sausage or brats, and you are welcome to bring a side dish or beverage. There will be some farm games (hoeing the row?) and good talk. You can also make a deposit on next year's CSA membership, probably a good idea since they sold out this year, with 15 fully paid memberships and 12 or so working members. There won't be much produce for sale, since the deer ate the pumpkins and the potatoes pretty much sold out to members, and the CSA will be doing a final group harvest to donate to the Food Bank. The CSA farmed a full acre and produced lots of crops, from beets to zucchini, and they are in the process of planting a permanent herb garden. Monday is the last CSA harvest pick-up day of the season.
Here's an early notice of the upcoming Trout Lake Area Business Association meeting, which will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, at the Trout Lake Grange. The TLABA is working on a map of Trout Lake showing the location of various events and businesses, and the draft is looking pretty nice. Get in touch with Rick Allen or Bev Meyer and they can email you a draft. At the meeting, they will continue working on the map project and will also review an initial round of community grant proposals. Business Association members and the public are invited.
