After suffering through a few nearly windless days, the 2004 Gorge Games' wind events finally took flight last Wednesday, July 14, with the completion of the kiteboard competitions at the Hood River Event Site.
Adam Koch prevailed over Chris Gilbert in the men's kiter-cross, while Bri Chmel topped Songa Fischli in the women's event.
Chmel became a double Gorge Games medalist when she bettered Fischli in the women's expression session.
Amery Bernard defeated Jeff Roberts to win the men's expression session title.
Kayak--The Extreme:
Tao Berman took men's honors, Brooke Winger the women's, in last Thursday's competition on the White Salmon River.
Berman had the fastest time during both legs of the event.
He completed his first run down Big Brother and Little Brother in 1 minute, 37.81 seconds. He concluded his second run with a 2:15.52 effort over Husum Falls to the finish line at BZ Corner.
Winger was one of two women to run the two legs of the race.
She took the first leg in 1:52.99, the second in 2:35.27.
Junior Supercross:
Andy Crafts won five of six heats last Thursday on his way to first place in the windsurfing event for 13- to 18-year-olds, held on the Columbia River at The Hatchery State Park.
In the 12-and-under division, Lenny Kai finished first in four of six heats and edged Gabriel Tremblay for the victory.
Windsurfing:
Mitch Gingrich and Frederic Steineck shared the top of the podium after tying for first place during last Thursday's open men's freestyle event at The Hatchery State Park.
Steineck lost to Gingrich head-to-head in round 12 of the double-elimination competition, but stayed alive by defeating third-place finisher Tad Poor in the consolation final.
In the 17th and final round, Steineck matched Gingrich, trick for trick, to earn his half of the championship.
Other winners were Temira Wagonfeld (women), Roy Bartholdi (masters) and Clay Emer (juniors).
Kayak--Head to Head:
Brooke Winger won her second Gorge Games title last Friday by beating Jamie Cooper, Heather Herbeck and Karen Mann in the women's final on the White Salmon River at BZ Corner.
During the preceding time trials, Cooper had the better qualifing time of 43.85 seconds. Winger was second in 46.37.
Pat Keller had the best qualifying time and made it stand up with a victory over Rusty Sage, Josh Bechtel and Tom McKee in the men's event final.
Mountain Bike:
The team of Rick Scott and Mark Robinson came in first in the 2-hour version of the Kingsley Adventure Race, completing the course in 1 hour, 29 minutes last Saturday.
In the 4-hour division, Tim and the Bros held off Holly Rollers, 3:32 to 3:37.
Team Nomad used more time but put it to good use in piling up 1,760 points to outscore PDX AR in the 6-hour race.
Sailing:
Dalton Bergan and Zack Maxam led a 1-2-3 USA sweep of last weekend's 49er regatta on the Columbia River, at Cascade Locks.
The Bergan-Maxam team sailed to first-place finishes in nine of 15 heats held last Friday through Sunday. Their margin of victory was 11 points (20 to 31, over David Fagan and Edward Goss).
Americans Cameron McCloskey and Eric Aakhus edged countrymen Brooks Reed and Matt Noble, 30 to 32, to claim the 29er regatta crown.
