Shannon Carroll of Raleigh, N.C., and South African Steve Fisher took home the winners' shares of the $10,000 prize purse when they each placed first in the July 17 Ford Gorge Games Head-to-Head Kayaking competition.
Carroll, 24, came out on top in a tough field that included last year's Gorge Games Head-to-Head champion Brooke Winger as well as top kayakers Nicola Kelly and Maria Nokes.
Fisher dethroned the men's 2001 Gorge Games Head-to-Head champion, Eric Jackson.
The men's competition began the day with 32 paddlers, while 16 women lined up to contest the women’s crown. The event’s heat format pitted four paddlers against each other on the class V rapids of the White Salmon River with the top two from each race advancing on to the next round of four.
