Aided by a late-season forfeit from Mabton, Glenwood secured a spot in this week's Yakima Valley District 5 Class B basketball tournament with a 75-43 playoff victory over Klickitat last Saturday in Trout Lake.
The Eagles picked up a game on the Vandals in the Greater Columbia B League's Klickitat County Division last week after Mabton self-reported an eligibility rules violation during a Feb. 7 league meeting.
League officials ruled Mabton had to forfeit two GCB wins--Jan. 29 over Glenwood and Feb. 4 over Bickleton--in which it used an academically ineligible player.
But nothing was certain for Glenwood until the Eagles defeated Lyle, 49-40, in their regular-season finale last Friday.
Klickitat found itself at Lyle's mercy after losing to the Klickitat County Division champions, 56-31, last Wednesday.
Glenwood finished the regular season on a roll, winning its last four games--a streak that included the playoff win against Klickitat.
Their latest victory earned the Eagles the Klickitat County Division's third district seed. They opened tournament play Tuesday against Riverside Christian, the Yakima Valley Division's No.-2 team.
Glenwood 49, at Lyle 40 --
The Eagles took control of a game they had to win with a strong third quarter in which they out-scored the Cougars, 17-8.
Glenwood led, 20-19, at halftime after leading 12-1 at the end of the first quarter.
David Hoodenpyl and Tony Leiter each scored 13 points, and Tanner Beeks chipped in 11 points and eight rebounds for the Eagles.
"Glenwood played hard, killed us on the boards and out-hustled us to every loose ball," said Cougars Coach Joe Bales.
Kalvin Kernan had 17 points and six rebounds for the Cougars, who had already sewn up a first-round bye in district play.
Lyle takes on the winner of Tuesday's loser-out game between Mabton-Trout Lake game this Friday at Sunnyside High School.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 21-3 lead in the first quarter last Friday and never looked back.
Shay Smith scored 16 points to take game honors and lead three Trout Lakers in double figures. Kris Huffsmith chipped in 15 and Ben Steward added 11.
Bryan Whitmore's double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds paced the Pirates.

Martin Grace had 13 points, nine rebounds and six steals as the Cougars secured a first-round district bye with the Feb. 9 victory over the Vandals.
Grace scored nine of his points in the first half as Lyle took a 25-7 lead into the locker rooms at halftime. The Cougars increased that to 38-18 at the end of three quarters with a buzzer-beating 3-point shot by Chris Cochenour.
Kalvin Kernan finished with a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds, and Joey Nelson tallied 11 points for Lyle, which out-scored Klickitat in every quarter.
The Cougars' Devan Essex held the GCB's leading scorer, J.J. Keys, to three points in the first half and eight points overall with a stifling man-to-man coverage.

J.J. Keys converted 23 straight free throws Feb. 8 on his way to a game-high 37 points.
Keys, an 88-percent free-throw shooter on the season, sank 19 from the line in the fourth quarter and 23 of 24 overall to help the Vandals hold off the Eagles.
Cory Fakesch contributed 12 points and nine rebounds for Klickitat, which needed the win to stay ahead of Glenwood in the run for the division's final district playoff berth.
