On Thursday, Aug. 19, free firewood will be available at the White Salmon Cemetery on Snowden Road.
The firewood will come from two large fir trees being removed to make way for a military walk of honor that is going to be constructed at the cemetery. The V-shaped walkway is planned to be eight feet wide, with each leg of the "V" measuring about 200 feet long.
"It is a county-wide military walk of honor," explained Husum resident Jerry Smith. "It will be for any person who lives or has lived in the county, served in any branch of the military, and has an honorable discharge."
The American Legion posts in both White Salmon and Goldendale are the key sponsors of the honorary walkway, which organizers hope to have completed by October.
Formal groundbreaking for the project is expected in the week beginning Aug. 23, but before that point two fir trees must be cleared. Smith said he wants to offer the opportunity for anyone in the community who needs firewood to be able to come and haul some away.
"People can take all they want, and we'll accept any donations or help with cleanup people want to offer," Smith said.
Residents can come to the cemetery to collect firewood on Aug. 19, beginning at 9 a.m.
