The Gorge Community Foundation announced that $2,605 has been granted to Columbia High School's music program.
According to Chandra Rampersad, the school's music director, the money will be used to buy instruments for the relatively new, but highly popular, Mariachi Band.
The school plans to purchase three violins, two guitars and a high-pitched, five string guitar known as a vihuela.
"This grant allows every student to have their own instrument for practice and performance," said Rampersad.
Rampersad started the alternative band in the fall of 2010 as a way to engage more students in the music program. Thirteen students -- many of whom had never played an instrument -- signed up for the Mariachi Band the first year.
This year, the ranks swelled to 20 members and the unanticipated growth resulted in a shortage of instruments.
"We didn't want to turn anyone away," said Rampersad. She adds that the grant will allow the music department to purchase quality instruments that will last for many years.
When a student graduates or leaves the band, the instrument will be passed on to a new band member.
Last year, the Gorge Community Foundation donated $104,885 to a broad range of organizations and programs in the local area.
Board member Bill Whidden notes that the donation to Columbia High School is just one of 59 different grants awarded by the Foundation in 2011.
"As a local community foundation, we work closely with our donors to assess and address community needs," said Whidden. "The Foundation holds nearly 60 separate funds, which are pooled, managed and invested to generate growth and income for granting purposes."
The Gorge Community Foundation, with assets in excess of $2.5 million, was established in 2000.
