Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area Manager Dan Harkenrider has issued a "Decision Notice/Finding of No Significant Impact" approving "Revised Alternative 2" with modifications for the Burdoin/Coyote Wall/Catherine Creek Area Recreation Plan.
According to the notice, the decision "maintains opportunities for established recreational uses and minimizes impacts to natural and cultural resources while respecting private property in the area."
The project area includes the Burdoin Mountain, Coyote Wall and Catherine Creek area, from the National Forest lands near the SMA boundary east of Bingen, east to Major Creek, and from State Route 14 north to the extent of consolidated National Forest System lands.
This decision includes several changes to existing trails including: reconstruction or closure of some trails; parking areas and allowed recreational uses are specified; and mitigation measures for cultural and natural resources are identified.
The decision considered the purpose and need for action; the issues, public comments received; and the full range of alternatives.
Also considered were a broad range of concerns expressed throughout this process relating to private landowners, recreational users, and the natural resources. The decision took into consideration input from the public, local county trail committees, trail advisory groups and a thorough review of the analysis and project record.
