Ian Bohince kept Hood River alive Friday night at McKay High School during the opening game of 2005 Eagle football. Bohince ran for 164 yards, averaging 7.5 yards per carry to score four touchdowns. McKay’s spread-option offense was well-executed, however, proving too tough for Hood River’s young defensive line. McKay took the win, 48-31.
“Offensively we started really good,” said Coach Tracy Jackson. “But we struggled after our first drive through the first half. In the second half we started to get a good rhythm but it was too little too late.”
Hood River started on fire, in fact, scoring the first touchdown of the game on the opening kickoff. Bohince went on to score three more and a run-in conversion.
Statistically, the Eagles actually out-rushed McKay 260-yards to 225. In the air, however, McKay out-passed Hood River 94-yards to 6 for a total of 319-yards McKay, 266-yards Hood River.
“They aren’t terrible numbers,” Jackson commented. “But I think some of the rookie mistakes we made put us in poor position when we gave them the ball so obliviously we gave up a lot of points in doing that …We’re a pretty inexperienced group right now and McKay exposed some of the weaknesses we need to work on.”
Since Friday was the first time Jackson has ever seen the team play in a real game, he and the boys, and the coaching staff, will go back to the drawing board before the game next Friday at David Douglas High School.
“Now that we’ve had a chance to get a look in real life, against a real spread, we what our weaknesses are and what we need to improve on,” Jackson said.
