The men's and women's Extreme Kayaking competitions each sent 16 paddlers down the fast-running White Salmon River last Friday in pursuit of Gorge Games bragging rights and equal shares of a record $30,000 prize purse.
In this timed event, the kayaker with the best overall time after two heats is crowned champion.
South African Steve Fisher, winner of last Wednesday's Head-to-Head competition, made it a clean sweep of the men's kayaking championships at the 2002 Ford Gorge Games.
He took home $10,000 for his first-place finish by mastering a 200-yard section of thrashing whitewater that included a perilous drop off the 25-foot Big Brother Falls, then a 100-foot run downstream to its less-technical sibling, the 15-foot Little Brother Falls, for the finish.
Scott Shipley, the games' 1998 Extreme Kayak winner, finished a close second, with Andrew Holcombe and Ryan Casey closing out the money spots in third and fourth respectively.
The women's competition saw Head-to-Head runnerup Nicola Kelly of Pete Spiers, Calif., triumph over the White Salmon River's most treacherous stretch to earn $10,000 and her first appearance atop the Gorge Games podium.
Canadian Anna Levesque came in second, followed by Sara Mullett of Hood River. Shannon Carroll, winner of the 2002 women's Head-to-Head championships, placed fourth.
