July 31 is "National Dance Day" in the USA. Come and enjoy the music of "The Grange Boys" at the pavilion in the park. They will play from 4 to 7 p.m. Check around town for the posters relating to this event.
All are invited to a memorial service for Shirley Tanner on Saturday, Aug. 14, at 2 p.m. It will be held at the Columbia Grange Hall and followed by a potluck dinner hosted by the Sundowners RV Club. Shirley was a lifetime member of the RV club and the grange; she passed away at home in June.
Condolences go to the family and friends of Eunice Crosby, who also passed away at home a week or so ago. She and her husband Jim lived in Lyle many years and at one time had the Crosby Stables on Old Highway 8. They hosted field days with thoroughbred horses during "Pioneer Days".
It has been reported that Jim Curl is soon to be moved from MCMC to the Veteran's Home in The Dalles for physical therapy. Jim has been hospitalized for several weeks after experiencing numbness in his extremities from a back disk problem. He has undergone surgery and every one is hopeful for a full recovery.
Mildred will be manning the museum this Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Come see what's new.
History (Pioneer Days much better than Atomic Ages, says Ira Rowland) White man whipped squaw and caused panic at Panakanic: "Chapter ll -- The big meadow was even more beautiful then than it is now. The grass was tall and rich and filled with wildflowers. Mt. Adams seemed to rise up behind. Every thing went well until the Indians came to dig camas. The roots of the blue camas were an important part of the Indian's food. They ate camas like we eat potatoes. The squaws would dig the roots in the summer."
"My folks and George Ward didn't like the Indians digging all over their fields and tromping down the tall grass. So they staked off a place for the Indian's to dig and built a brush fence around it. An old squaw kept digging outside the fence."
All about Cucumbers: Have an important meeting or job interview and you realize you don't have enough time to polish your shoes? Rub a freshly cut cucumber over the shoe, its chemicals will provide a quick and durable shine that not only looks great but also repels water.
