Shirley Cox, who resigned as chair of the White Salmon Planning Commission in the summer, was honored by the city last week.
Cox spent 10 years with the Planning Commission, including approximately eight years as chair.
"Ten years is a long time, and it's a really tough job," said Mayor Roger Holen in praise of Cox.
Cox said she enjoyed her service for the city.
"I tried to leave it better than when I got there," Cox said. "I'm proud of a lot we got accomplished. I felt we had a really good, diverse cross-section of members from several different disciplines and that made us a really good Planning Commission. There is still a lot to do, but I needed to take a break."
Holen presented Cox with an inscribed, digital clock at the Dec. 3 meeting of the White Salmon City Council.
The inscription read: "In appreciation of your service for 10 years, 1993-2003."
"We thought it was something she could display, something with a utilitarian function rather than a plaque to display on the wall," Holen said. "If everybody took 10 years out of their lives to serve the city, we'd have a fabulous city."
Cox said she was touched by the gift.
"It's a gorgeous little clock. It's very special," Cox said.
The departure of Cox, and also of commission member Richard Marx, who won a seat on the City Council in November, leaves two openings on the city's five-member Planning Commission. Those interested in serving can call White Salmon City Hall at 493-1133.
