The Gorge United of White Salmon boys soccer club made its U-19 league record 2-0-1 last weekend with a draw in Longview and a shutout victory in Vancouver.
Alexis Gomez netted United’s goal in last Saturday’s 1-1 tie with Longview’s Timber Barons.
“It was a great game. We played great soccer,” United Coach Pero Lovrin noted.
United, a young team comprised of mostly high school sophomores, held its own against the Longview club with “outstanding” defense and midfield play “that created many (scoring) chances, especially in the second half,” Lovrin said, adding, “Finishing is something that we need to improve.”
Lovrin attributed the Timber Barons’ goal to a “midfield turnover and slow defensive recognition.” Other than that, the coach found much good to say about United’s play in its second match of the fall season.
“I love the way this team plays together,” Lovrin said. “Passing, defending, work rate and teamwork have been exceptional.”
On Sunday, United got second-half goals from Gomez and Ramon Cortez for a 2-0 win over Prairie Ice on a wet and muddy Vancouver-area field.
United’s first goal came from 20 yards out “with a nice build-up,” Lovrin noted. The second scoring shot came on a free kick from 25 yards.
“It was total teamwork with no substitutes, and they got stronger as the game went on,” Lovrin said of United’s performance against Prairie Ice.
“I have been coaching for many years and many outstanding teams, but I am having great fun and pleasure coaching and watching this group play together,” Lovrin continued. “We don’t have much depth, so I am hoping we can go through the season without injury or sickness. Otherwise, a great start so far.”
Coming Up: Gorge United will host the CW Bears this Saturday, starting at 3 p.m., on Columbia High School’s upper practice field.
Lovrin said it’s a match United has been looking forward to since it beat the Bears, 2-1, at a Vancouver tournament this summer.
“The Bears won the league championship last year. We finished second,” Lovrin noted. “It should be a great game.”
