White Salmon's City Swimming Pool is back in operation -- better later than never at this point in the 2011 season.
City Councilor and Pool Committee member Mark Peppel said Monday that the last of the parts the committee needed to effect proper repairs finally came in late last week. The replacement parts were installed with the help of volunteer Chuck Jacobs of White Salmon, and the pumps were up and running last Friday.
Peppel announced last Saturday during the fiesta in Rheingarten Park that the City Pool would reopen for business on Monday. But that's not what happened.
Over the weekend the water clouded because too much chlorine got injected into the system, so Pool Committee members and City Pool staff decided against reopening until the water clears.
"That water was crystal-clear last Friday; everything was looking good for us opening up again on Monday," Peppel said. "But with everything that's happened this season, it would be just our luck that something like this would happen."
Nonetheless, the Pool Committee plans to reopen the pool to the public this week, and for swim lessons for Whitson Elementary School students.
"We'll be having a Pool Committee meeting as soon as we can to set the schedule for September and possibly for October if the weather calls for it," Peppel said.
