Columbia High's boys basketball team looked to play a spoiler role when it traveled to Ilwaco last Friday for its final game of the 2008-09 season.
But after a strong start that led to a 20-15 advantage after one quarter of the SWW 1A Trico Division contest, the Bruins struggled to keep up with the Fishermen, who went on to post a 78-47 victory.
Ilwaco (6-4, 13-7) began to get more open looks at the basket in the second quarter and capitalized by outscoring Columbia 18-12 to take a 33-32 edge into the halftime break.
Karl Oman sparked the Fishermen in the first half, sinking four 3-pointers and netting 19 of his game-high 21 points.
In the second half, Ilwaco's Jack Whealdon took over, pouring in four 3-pointers in the Fishermen's 24-point third quarter and all 20 of his points after the intermission.
The big quarter left Ilwaco holding a 57-41 lead entering the final eight minutes of regulation.
For Columbia, which finished 2-8 in the Trico Division and 8-12 overall under first-year Bruins Coach Jason Suess, sophomore guard Mark Lovrin tallied 16 points and senior forward Carlos Mendoza put in 14.
