Waucoma Bookstore is hosting Portland children's author Joe Spooner for a book signing on Friday, Oct. 3, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the bookstore in Hood River.
Spooner will be signing his books "N is for Nostril...and Other Alphabet Silliness," and "Elephant Walk."
"N is for Nostril" is a book for kids and grown-ups.
Did you know that alligators make horrible pilots? That jellyfish are distant cousins of marmaladefish? That some ladybugs are actually menbugs?
In "The Elephant Walk" Norah has a proboscidean dream and is determined to find an elephant in her inner-southeast Portland neighborhood. There's an elephant hidden in every picture. Your child can help you find it.
Spooner is the creator of the cartoon feature "Mr. Portland," which appeared in the Oregonian for over 10 years. His work has also appeared in Arnica Publishing, Esquire, Saturday Review, The Oregon Council of Teachers Mathematics' TOMT, The Portland Business Journal, Willamette Week, The Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory's NW Education, The King Features' The New Breed, Northwest Natural [Gas], First Books and Great Source Education Group
Spooner spent his formative years (0 to 15) following his migrant parents around the country, with a trip to Guam thrown in. (His dad was a Marine fighter pilot.)
He went to most of high school and all of college in Portland, Ore., then got to do some more traveling around the world as an Air Force pilot.
He now lives in Portland and does freelance cartooning and graphic design. His wife, Patti, is a nurse midwife.
He has taught a cartooning class at Mt. Hood Community College for more than 20 years. He is presently working on an as yet unnamed counting book.
