Hey, I know you read the first paragraph and skip the rest, but this time, read right down to the last paragraph to find out about the fair's new grant program.
Election and Community Council news: The Trout Lake Community Council has scheduled a county candidates night for Wednesday, Nov. 1, at 7:30 p.m. at the Trout Lake School. There are still several contested county elections, although the primary decided the sheriff's race and the prosecutor's race. Contested county races include commissioner district 2, auditor, and PUD commissioner. There should be plenty of time for questions, so come on down and ask yours.
The election for Community Council positions will be held at the grange, next to the regular polling place on Election Day, Nov. 7. Jeff Baker, election coordinator, needs poll-watchers for one-hour slots during the day. Call Jeff at 395-2279 to volunteer. There are three positions up in the regular election cycle, and one candidate for each -- Pat Arnold, position 1; Monte Pearson, position 2; Ray Thygesen, position 3. There are two candidates who were appointed mid-term and so have to stand election -- Robert Schmid position, 8; and Hans Winterlich, position 9.
Since so many people vote by mail, the council is worried about turn-out for the election. We might have to go to a mail or email vote system, too, but it's not in place for this year. So maintain a great American tradition and go to the polls on Nov. 7.
Upcoming Council and Sub-Area planning meetings are on Oct. 26 (planning, with guest Curt Dryer of Klickitat County Planning), November 1 (discussion of county park and the candidates forum), and another planning meeting sometime in November (discussion of the circulation session, ag and timber, projections of growth rate). All are welcome at any meeting of the council or Sub-Area planning group.
Candy Schultz, you've left a big hole in our community. We will miss you, your friendly nature, your sparkling smile, your ready laugh, and your quiet and faithful service. Rest in peace. Our hearts go out to John and to the rest of Candy's family.
Christmas Cantata practice started Sunday, Oct. 8, but everyone is still welcome to sing. The cantata is one of Trout Lake's oldest traditions and a wonderful experience if you like to sing. Practices are weekly between now and December. Call Doug Anderson, elected every year as the choral director most fun to work with, or Monte Pearson for more information.
While we are on singing, the Trout Lake Singers are well into their fall session, which ends on Oct. 30. However, I think new singers are still welcome. Their second session will run March 5 to April 23. The Singers are directed by Doug and Janet Anderson. Call them for more information.
Probably everyone already knows, but just in case, there's a retirement party for Ross Bluestone and LaRae McCaslin, both retiring after 30 years at the Forest Service. The date is Saturday, Oct. 14; the place is the Elks Lodge in White Salmon, starts at 7 p.m., goes to 11 p.m. Bring finger food or potluck, no gifts. Please pay $5 at the door to help pay for the band and the room.
Dr. J. David Kinzie from Oregon Health Sciences University is the next speaker in the on-going peace forum sponsored by Presbyterian Church. Dr. Kinzie will discuss the impact of fear on decision-making both personally and politically. The public is invited to participate regardless of religions or secular orientation. The meeting is on Friday, Oct. 20, 7 to 9 p.m. at the Trout Lake School. Call Barbara Schram, 395-2732, for more information.
Flu shots will be available from the County Health Department. Go to 501 NE Washington, White Salmon. There is a small charge. Children and adults welcome.
Last but not least -- something new from the fair board. The Trout Lake Fair Board of Directors wishes to thank the Trout Lake Community for its wholehearted support and enthusiasm for the 2006 Fair! Due to the financial success of this year's fair, the board has established a grant program to give back to our community. So far this year the following grants have been awarded: $50 to the Class of 2007, $300 to the Cabin Fever Festival, and $300 to the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday basket programs. A modest amount of additional grant money is available. Applications from the community will be welcome until Dec. 31, 2006. It is required that grant money be used "in the enrichment of life in the community of Trout Lake," such as an event, a service, a project, supplies or equipment that benefits the community. Please contact Ray Thygesen (395-2318) or Karen Smith (395-2170) for a grant application.
