Senior Josabet Pulido and junior Whitney Butler combined for 23 points to lead Columbia High past Lyle, 51-39, Dec. 29 at the Columbia Gorge Holiday Tournament in Stevenson.
Pulido scored 12 points and Butler had 11 as the Bruins improved to 5-2 and won this season's State Route 14 series with the Cougars, 2-1.
Senior Kalvin Kernan had a big game for Lyle (3-5), pumping in a game- and season- high 28 points, but he was the only Cougar to reach double figures.
Columbia led at every break in play, posting a 14-5 advantage after one quarter.
Lyle kept the game close, however, trailing 27-19 at halftime and pulling within 40-33 at the end of three periods.
"We played much better than we did the last time," said Cougars Coach Joe Bales. "We started and finished slow but we battled them all four quarters."
Goldendale 65, Stevenson 60 --
The Timberwolves finished the tournament 2-0 with the victory over the host Bulldogs.
Senior Callan Wilkins led Goldendale (6-4) with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Seniors Ryan Gleckner and Billy Turner added 13 and 10 points respectively.
Junior Daron Aman's 19 points paced Stevenson (4-3), which also got 15 from sophomore Jereth Robinson.
The Timberwolves held a 21-13 lead after one quarter and led 37-28 at the end of two.
Goldendale 64, Columbia High 48 --
Ten consecutive points to open the third quarter propelled the Timberwolves past the Bruins in their Dec. 28 tournament matchup.
Callan Wilkins had a double-double of 25 points and 15 rebounds for Goldendale, which got out to a 19-8 lead in the first eight minutes of action.
But Columbia closed within 25-19 at the half with better efforts on defense and on the backboards.
At the start of the third quarter, however, Goldendale capitalized on CHS's inattention by releasing Ryan Gleckner--who finished with 23 points--for back-to-back cherry-pick buckets that netted the Timberwolves a 10-point lead.
Goldendale subsequently increased its lead to 16 before Columbia could counter with its first basket of the second half.
Junior Andrew Culp put in 14 points for the Bruins, who also got 10 from senior Nick Patrick.
Stevenson 75, Lyle 52 --
The Bulldogs hit nearly 50 percent of their field-goal attempts and out-rebounded the Cougars, 50-32, in their tournament opener Dec. 28.
Stevenson's backcourt of sophomore Jereth Robinson and senior Cory Rathgeber led the way for the Bulldogs, scoring 26 and 21 points respectively.
Senior Kalvin Kernan totaled 22 points and 10 rebounds, and junior Martin Grace tallied 13 points for Lyle, which trailed 19-18 after one quarter and 38-29 at halftime.
The Bulldogs took control of the contest in the third quarter, putting in 21 points to the Cougars' 8.
"We played hard but Stevenson's guards were way too athletic for us," Cougars Coach Joe Bales said. "They have great quickness and beat us to the basket all night long."
