Two Hood River Port Commissioners who were appointed to fill vacancies have decided to utilize their training by seeking a first elected term in office.
Sherry Bohn and Hoby Streich both plan to file by Thursday’s 5 p.m. deadline for their respective Position 4 and 5 roles. Bohn was chosen in April of 2001 to fill the unexpired term of Peg Lalor and Streich in September of 2002 to replace Bob Nichols.
Both individuals believe that their hands-on training in port policies and procedures have prepared them to enter a new four-year term and be highly effective.
“I want to continue the working relationship that I’ve already established with the board and staff,” said Streich, who has also served on the port’s budget committee.
Both he and Bohn operate small businesses and contend that a working knowledge of Hood River’s private sector gives them a good perspective for public service. Their top priorities are to help the port work out the final zoning details with the city to complete the waterfront master plan and then get to work bringing in high quality jobs.
“I’ve put two years into this and feel the board has a good snergy going and are moving forward with some of the issues we need to face,” said Bohn, owner of Sage’s Cafe and Coffeehouse and president of the Hood River Downtown Business Association.
Streich is the co-owner of Cascade Market and the adjoining car wash and views the waterfront as a “diamond in the rough” that could become Hood River’s “crown jewel.”
