ph Balance, a four-piece Atlanta band whose original, soulful blend of hip-hop, trip-hop and acid jazz is making a huge imprint on the national music scene.
The stunning sounds of one of the top touring beat-hop acts hits the River City Saloon this Friday for a 9:30 p.m. show. There will be a cover charge.
Birthed six years ago with a mission toward southern poetic communication transferred via soul hums and collard greens, ph Balance has been laying it down and flowing in and out of front woman Pam Howe ‘s (ph) soulful vocals.
She’s been deciphering rhymes and singing through riddles for 14 years on the Atlanta scene and has eight albums and five poetry pamphlets under her belt. While Howe sings, she is supported by drummer Chris Burt, bassist Kevin Vines, and Tony James on percussion and samples.
After playing a Bosa Nova band earlier in her career, the rise of hip hop lured artists towards Howe and her strong use of rhythm.
From this launching pad, Howe said the jump to hip-hop was easier than expected. “I was so drawn to hip hop because of the honesty and truth in its expression. It was a big challenge for me because my lyrics at that time were abstract and hip-hop is down to earth.”
In the last two years, ph Balance has risen with videos on MTV as well as national appearancew with the Indigo Girls.
