Matthew Bergstrom of White Salmon continued his assault on the Hood River Valley Swim Team's record book with three record-setting swims last weekend at the Oregon State 10-and-under Championships in Albany.
The 8-year-old established new HRVST age-group standards in the 100-meter freestyle, 50-meter freestyle and 50-meter butterfly.
His effort in the latter (45.05 seconds) was the only winning performance by an HRVST swimmer.
He and older brother Scott, 10, each posted five personal records during the "qualifiers only" event, which drew in 250 swimmers from Oregon and southwest Washington. They also combined for nine top-eight finishes in 10 swims.
Mariah Rawding, 9, Husum, was HRVST's lone girl in the competition. She had qualified in six events, and recorded top-eight finishes in three of them. Her highest finish was third place in the 50-meter butterfly.
"Overall, a very successful meet for the Osprey," noted HRVST Coach Shelly Rawding.
At Pendleton, Ore.:
Erin Jones, 14, of White Salmon won three swims and tallied four personal records last weekend at the Pendleton Invitational Swim Meet.
Swimming in the girls 13-14 age group, Jones finished in the top-seven in all nine of her events and was the first to touch in the 1500-meter freestyle, the 400 freestyle and the 200 freestyle.
At The Dalles, Ore.:
Erin Jones won six races and Matthew Bergstrom finished first four times to lead HRVST to a third-place finish at the Ted Walker Invitational July 8-10 in The Dalles.
Two-event winners for HRVST--which totaled 501 points (263 girls, 238 boys)--included Scott Bergstrom, 10, White Salmon, and Jessie L. Robertson, 12, Trout Lake.
Team members also set a bunch of new personal records (PRs).
Matthew Bergstrom and Robertson each posted five PRs during the competition.
Four PRs went to Scott Bergstrom; Corrie Brending, 9, White Salmon; and Mariah Rawding, 9, Husum. White Salmon brothers Adam (13) and Arin (11) Wooster both logged three PRs.
