White Salmon Valley School District officials are concerned about the impacts Klickitat County’s Snowden-Loop Roads intersection project that’s scheduled to start next Monday, Aug. 31, the day before local schools open for the 2015-16 school year.
The County Board of Commissioners awarded the project to Nutter Corporation in the amount of $1,470,392. It was the lowest of three bids received.
Jeff Hunter, assistant public works director for the county, said the contractor plans to start work on Aug. 31. He said the county intends to work with Nutter Corporation “to limit lane restrictions during the peaks of school traffic.”
The county held a public meeting on Tuesday to provide area residents with a construction update that included scheduling and impacts. White Salmon Schools Supt. Jerry Lewis said Susan Tibke, the district’s transportation supervisor, was going to attend that meeting to share her concerns about construction effects on morning and afternoon bus routes.
Lewis also noted that he planned to meet with county Public Works officials Thursday morning in Goldendale to present a slate of school district concerns.
“We have significant concerns,” he said. “Bus traffic impacts, parents driving kids to school, kids walking to school. We need to get these things addressed before school starts. So, it’s kind of stay tuned and see what we find out. It’s going to be a major challenge.”
